The AVCA announced that 973 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2017-2018 season. This number breaks the previous year's total of 835 to set an all-time high.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Junior pre-speech language pathology major, Grace Convey, earned a 4.0 GPA for both the fall 2017 and spring 2018 terms. Convey was joined by three other beach athletes whose success in the classroom led to perfect GPA's.
Five indoor volleyball student-athletes achieved 4.0 GPAs as well, helping lead their team to 3.42 and 3.30 GPAs in the fall and spring semesters respectively.
Together, the two teams complete the 2017-18 academic year with 13 student-athletes with a 3.5 GPA or better- six of whose GPA was greater than 3.7.
ULM is only one of 13 schools who had both their indoor and beach programs honored with the award, and one of five Sun Belt Conference members on the list.
