MONROE, La. – The ULM women's tennis team continues its fall slate this weekend, when the Warhawks travel to Lafayette, Louisiana for the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational, starting on Friday, Sept. 28.
ULL will be hosting schools from in-state and near-by Texas making up seven schools, along with the Ragin' Cajuns, who will be taking part in the tournament. Incarnate Word, Stephen F. Austin and Lamar make the trip across the Texas border into Louisiana, joining McNeese State, Northwestern State, Louisiana Tech and ULM for a busy weekend of tennis at Cajun Courts.
Action starts on Friday with doubles at 8 a.m., followed by singles playing through until the final matchups are set. Saturday will see two rounds of doubles, deciding a champion in that portion of the tournament, before wrapping up the singles tournament. The entire weekend is free to attend for all fans.
Last weekend, at the UCA Fall Classic, the Warhawks were forced to play a day early at multiple locations, but the tournament was still cut short due to inclement weather.
No singles flights were complete, but freshman
Shivani Manjanna did earn a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Arkansas State's Shelby King in round of Flight A, before falling to UMKC's Katie Fries in a 6-2, 6-0 decision.
Returning sophomore
Teodora Radu also won her first round, defeating Missouri State's Anna Alons. Radu would go on to fall to UMKC's Yana Grechkina, 6-7, 6-1, 10-6.
Freshman
Angeles Maria Cueto saw great success in Conway. Cueto saw three straight victories at the tournament, beating out Versha Sharma of UMKC (6-1, 4-6, 10-7), ASU's Shannon O'Brien (7-6, 4-6, 10-5). Cueto was set to face UCA's Mei Ishimura in the final round of Flight C before the tournament was ended because of the weather.
Both Florencia Slaerno and Jimena Garbino were defeated in round one of their perspective flights, but went on to beat out future opponents in the consolation rounds.
In doubles play, Manjanna and Salerno recorded a 6-2 win over Southeast Missouri's Teona Velkovska and Isabella Krupa before dropping a 6-4 decision to Southeastern's Putri Isani and Ximena Yanez.
Freshman duo Cueto and Garbino struggled on the doubles front, dropping a round one win to a pair from UMKC (6-4) and then the consolation round to SLU's Flory Bierma and Bernadette Dornieden (6-2).
Last season, the Warhawks recorded victories against four of the seven other teams, including McNeese, Southeastern, Louisiana Tech, and the Ragin' Cajuns.
