MONROE, La. – Five members of the ULM tennis team will head to the 2019 ITA Women's Southern Regional in Baton Rouge, which begins play on Thursday. The tournament, hosted by LSU, runs Thursday-Tuesday at the LSU Tennis Complex with other matches played at the student recreation center on campus.
Among the five Warhawks taking part in the event will be
Karolina Snita,
Emma Billon, Maria Alfaro, Angeles Cueto and Jaminea Garbino, who will advance to the second round due to a walkover win. Snita and Alfaro will compete in doubles for ULM, as will Garbino and Cueto.
Snita and Alfaro, who took part in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in late September, enter the weekend tied with a 5-1 record in singles play for ULM. Snita snagged three of those wins at the Hidden Duals, following wins over opponents from UT-Rio Grande Valley, Louisiana Tech and the Ragin' Cajuns. The two remaining singles victories came in Milwaukee when facing Purdue's Ena Babic and East Carolina's Lisa Hofbauer.
Alfaro, like her teammate, also emerged with singles victories against opponents from UT-Rio Grande Valley, Louisiana Tech and the Ragin' Cajuns at the Hidden Duals. Her first two wins of the season came versus Marquette's Giulia Turconi and Nebraska's Hayley Haakenstad, also in Milwaukee.
The team of Alfaro and Snita have a 4-2 record in doubles action for ULM in the fall slate. Three of those wins came at the Hidden Duals against UT-Rio Grande Valley (twice) and the Ragin' Cajuns. The first victory for the pair came over the Memphis tandem of Maria Aran Teixido Garcia and Monique Wood in the open of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
Cueto has also put together a solid fall slate with a perfect 3-0 record in singles play. All three of the wins came at the Hidden Duals over competition from UT-RGV, Louisiana Tech and the Ragin' Cajuns. She has one more win than Billon, who triumphed in singles matches against UT-RGV and the Cajuns. Garbino has played in three singles matches so far in the fall, claiming just one win in the process.
The combination of Garbino and Cueto are responsible for one doubles win this season, which came in the Hidden Duals against UT-RGV.
