Warhawks Storm Past Jacksonville State 5-0 in Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second time in program history and first time since the 2015 campaign, the ULM beach volleyball team opened the season with a win by virtue of a 5-0 sweep over Jacksonville State on Friday, Feb. 22 in the Blazer Beach Bash in Birmingham, Ala.
 
Battling through the rain and challenging weather conditions, Grace Convey and Gabby Love helped the Warhawks claim a 21-13, 21-14 win over Kaylie Milton and Ashley Pettibone on court one. Meanwhile, Maile Sellers and Catherine Griffith fought past an opening set loss to Katie Will and Shayla Schmidt to earn a 19-21, 21-7, 15-10 victory on court two.
 
"Despite the pouring rain, our team held their composure," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "Our big focus this season has been developing a mindset and a 'no excuses' attitude. Instead of making excuses and blaming the rain, we used the rain to our advantage."
 
ULM claimed the team victory when the tandem of Tamara Merseli and Kayla Gallant emerged with a 21-9, 21-9 triumph over the Gamecocks' Mackenzie Rombach and Hailey Hughes on court three.
 
The pair of Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp also were responsible for a match victory for ULM, downing Addie Halverson and Lena Kindermann by margins of 21-12, 21-11. ULM completed the sweep as the fifth court pairing of Holland Ponthieux and Bailey Smith posted a 21-18, 22-20 win against Beth Randall and Maddie Cloutier.
 
"All across the board our teams stayed steady and played their game," Rishell added. "Our serve receive was strong, and once we started mixing up our serving, everything else fell into place. Maile (Sellers) and Catherine (Griffith) at the second seed struggled in their first set, but were able to fix their mistakes quickly and dominate sets two and three."
