Warhawks Open Beach Volleyball Slate at Blazer Beach Bash

MONROE, La. – The ULM beach volleyball team opens its 2019 slate this weekend when the team heads to Birmingham, Alabama, to take part in the Blazer Beach Bash, hosted by UAB on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23.

"We are finally playing this weekend," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "After some complications with the weather, we were unsure if this tournament would even go on, so we are playing Friday morning. Beach volleyball is played in any weather, as long as there is no lightning, and our team in this preseason has practiced in any weather climate that you can imagine. Our athletes are hungry to compete against someone other than their teammates, and are fully prepared for the weekend ahead."

Last season, the Warhawks finished 9-12 overall, splitting their last four matches of the season. Both wins came against Austin Peay at the Bear Classic, hosted by Central Arkansas in mid-April.

ULM opens this season against Jacksonville State on Friday at 8 a.m. The two units have battled six times since the 2016 campaign with ULM winning all six meetings. The Warhawks return to the courts later that morning to face Huntingdon College at 10 a.m.

Saturday, the Warhawks square off against host UAB at 9:30 a.m., before facing North Alabama at 12:30 p.m. The Blazers are 5-4 in nine meetings against ULM, dating back to the 2013 season.

"Our team has been practicing on their physical and mental game leading up to this weekend, and our coaching staff is beyond ready to see them put their training to the test against some tough opponents," Rishell added. "Huntingdon College and North Alabama are fresh programs this year, but UAB is a very established team, which has received votes to be considered in the Top 20 in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

"Our goal this weekend is to trust in our training, trust in our teammates and staff members, and compete to our best ability no matter who is across the net. We hope to board the bus home to Monroe on Saturday with some points in the W column."
