ULM Defeats North Alabama, 3-2; Concludes Blazer Beach Bash at 3-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The ULM beach volleyball team wrapped up the Blazer Beach Bash with a 3-1 record after rebounding from a 3-2 setback in Saturday's morning session against host UAB by closing out a 3-2 victory over North Alabama in the afternoon.
 
ULM opened the dual with a victory on court five as Holland Pontheiux and Bailey Smith rebounded from an opening set loss to earn the come-from-behind win by scores of 12-21, 21-12, 15-11 against Ana Pacheco and Genesis Benitez. Tamara Merseli and Kayla Gallant recorded a straight-sets victory (21-15, 21-12) for ULM on court three over Ashtyn Kapovich and Maya Dickson. The Warhawks claimed the decisive win on court two when the duo of Maile Sellers and Catherine Griffith posted a 21-17, 18-21, 15-10 victory over Ashtyn Kapovich and Maya Dickson.
 
"After a few adjustments at the net, both Cat and Maile were able to really open up and become very dynamic on offense," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "They did a great job of mixing up hard driven balls and short shots to keep UNA on their toes. Holland and Bailey won because they did the little and technical things right. Kayla and Tamara brought a lot of energy and won the net game against UNA. They responded well after their previous loss to UAB at the threes."
 
The Lions (2-2) managed two wins on the day, including Sophia Brandstetter and Paula Klemperer emerging with a 21-15, 21-19 triumph over Gabby Love and Grace Convey on court one. The second win of the day came on court four with the duo of Ava Carnley and Elizabeth Jump posting a 21-17, 24-22 win against Allie Kemp and Elizabeth Moreland.
 
"Overall, we're proud to come back to ULM with three wins, but we're unsatisfied because our team knows how close we were to getting four victories," Rishell said. "We're ready to start Monday with a new focus for our new opponents in the weekend ahead."
 
ULM has four matches scheduled at the Texas A&M Kingsville Invitational March 1-2.
