Fanonnel Jumps into Top-10; ULM Climbs Three Spots on Leaderboard

OPELIKA, Ala. – ULM junior Guillaume Fanonnel moved into a three-way tie for sixth after firing a second-round 69 and helped the Warhawks climb to eighth in the team standings with a 17-over-par 593 (304-289) at the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Auburn University, on Monday, Feb. 25.
 
Fanonnel, who shaved six strokes off his first-round score of 75, began his day on the 10th green with a birdie. He added a second birdie on the 13th hole and finished the front nine with a total of six pars. Fanonnel recorded eight-straight pars, including three straight on the back nine turn, before coming through with an eagle on the fourth hole. After a bogey at five, he recovered to score a birdie at six and close the day with a trio of pars for the two-day tally of 144 (75-69, E).
 
ULM (304-289, +17) was one of five teams to record a sub-290 score in second round, including host Auburn which moved into first with a 573 (293-280, -3). The Warhawks are 20 strokes off the pace set by the Tigers and are two strokes behind Georgia State and the Auburn 'B' Team, which are tied for sixth at 15-over-par.
 
"The team played better today," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "The weather conditions were challenging with cool temperatures and wind, but we shot the fourth-best round of the day with a 289. Guillaume led the way with three birdies and an eagle to finish the round with a 69, and currently he sits in a tie for sixth.
 
"We need to play well again tomorrow and continue to climb the board, inching toward a top-five position."
 
Junior Andoni Etchenique also improved on his opening-round score for the Warhawks, moving up 13 spots on the leaderboard with a second-round 72. Etchenique began his day with a par at the 10th hole, trimming one stroke off his score with a birdie at 11. He scored five pars on his next seven holes, ending the front nine at 2-over-par, before rattling off three pars to start the back nine. Etchenique carded birdies in three of his next four holes (fourth, sixth and seventh), before wrapping up the day with a par and bogey. He is locked in a five-way tie for 33rd with a score of 149 (77-72).
 
Thibault Santigny moved into a six-way tie for 38th after a second-round 73, leaving him at 6-over-par with a 150 (77-73) for the tournament. The ULM junior carded two birdies and five pars on the front nine, which began at the 10th hole, before recording three pars to open the back nine. He overcame three-straight bogeys with an eagle at seven, improving his score to 1-over-par, before back-to-back pars.
 
Junior Joao Girao jumped three spots on the leaderboard after posting a 75 in the second round as he heads into the final round with a 9-over-par score of 153 (78-75). He tallied pars on six of his first nine holes, before wrapping up the back nine with all pars, finishing 3-over-par on the afternoon.
 
Otto Van Buynder tied Etchenique for the most birdies by an ULM player in the second round (four) to go along with eight pars. The freshman from South Africa has posted a two-day score of 9-over-par 153.
 
The final round of the Tiger Invitational gets underway Tuesday Feb. 26 at the Grand National Lake Course.
