OPELIKA, Ala.
ULM junior Guillaume Fanonnel earned his first Top-3 finish and recorded his fifth career Top-10 performance as he finished in a four-way tie for third at the Tiger Invitational, which concluded on Monday, Feb. 26 at the Grand National Lake Course.

Fanonnel, whose previous career-best finish was tying for sixth in the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate on Feb. 20-21, 2017, finished in a four-way tie for third alongside SMU teammates McClure Meissner and Noah Goodwin and Georgia State's Josh Edgar after shooting a final-round 69 to close with a 3-under-par 213 (75-69-69). The back-to-back rounds of 69 also marked the first time in his collegiate career that Fanonnel had consecutive rounds in the 60s.

ULM capped off the event with an eighth-place team finish, due in large part to three players finishing inside the Top-40, finishing with a three-day score of 16-over-par 880 (304-289-287). Tournament host Auburn, which is ranked 10th nationally, earned the team title with an 11-under-par score of 853 (293-280-280). The Tigers separated themselves from second-place SMU, which finished 1-under-par with an 863 (295-287-281) by virtue of an 8-under-par score in the final round.

Fanonnel rattled off five-straight pars to open the final round before recording back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. He recorded two birdies and a bogey in his next three holes before moving back to 2-under-par with an eagle at 12. Fanonnel had a stretch of three pars before closing with two birdies on his final three holes.

"We played well today, shooting 1-under-par as a team to finish eighth," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "Our first round cost us tremendously because we dug too deep a hole to seriously contend this week. Our winter rust certainly showed.

"I'm very proud of Guillaume finishing tied for third. Unfortunately, he found a difficult stance in a fairway bunker on 18 and missed the green, making a bogey to miss out on winning his first collegiate tournament. He's been working diligently and beat or tied 10 players inside the Top 100 in the country."

Junior Thibault Santigny, who concluded the tourney with a 5-over-par score of 221 (77-73-71), also placed among the Top 30 in the field, finishing in a six-way deadlock for 29th. Santigny enjoyed six pars and two birdies on the front nine before heading to the back nine where he carded six pars, one eagle and one birdie. The eagle came at the 12th hole, while his two birdies came on the fourth and 16th holes.

Junior Andoni Etchenique was one of five players tied for 35th after closing with a 6-over-par 222 (77-72-73). He enjoyed three birdies in the final round of play, which came at six, seven and 12, along with an eagle at the 14th hole. Etchenique had eight pars over the course of the round.

Junior Joao Girao recorded his best score of the tournament in the final round of action, finishing with a 74 en route to an 11-over-par score of 227 (78-75-74). In the third round, he carded 13 pars and two birdies, climbing two spots to finish in a four-way tie for 51st.

Freshman Otto Van Buynder ended the first tournament of the spring schedule in 64th after posting a 15-over-par 231 (75-78-78). Van Buynder was responsible for the most third-round birdies (5) of any Warhawk golfer. He emerged with two on the front nine – on the fourth and eighth holes – and closed out the back nine with three (12th, 14th, 16th). He also enjoyed four pars on the afternoon.

"I'm also very proud of how Thibault Santigny and Andoni Etchenique competed," Baldwin added. "We still have a lot of golf to play between now and our conference championship where we need to be hitting on all cylinders."

ULM returns to the course on March 11-12 when the Warhawks take part in the Laredo Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, hosted by the University of Houston.
