ULM Beach Volleyball Drops Saturday Matches to North Florida, Arizona State

Beach Volleyball
TUCSON, Ariz. – The ULM beach volleyball team concluded its trip to the Grand Canyon State with a pair of setbacks to North Florida (4-1) and Arizona State (3-2) Saturday (March 16) in the final day of action at the Arizona Invitational.

Match 1 Recap: North Florida 4, ULM 1
North Florida opened the match with a win on court five as Blaire Register and Carolyn Cain took down Holland Ponthieux and Audrey Brooks by scores of 21-12, 21-13. Dana Roskic and Callie Workman followed with a 21-17, 21-15 victory over Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp on court four, and the Ospreys wrapped up the team win as the No. 3 pairing of Madilyn McCarty and Nicole DeBolt defeated Tamara Merseli and Kayla Gallant.

ULM got on the scoreboard as its No. 2 pairing of Catherine Griffith and Maile Sellers recorded a three-set win against Antonia Harrison and Lauren Galinis, 21-16, 18-21, 15-11.

On court one, UNF picked up its fourth point of the match as Brittany Pase and Chaney Howard triumphed over Gabby Love and Grace Convey in three sets by scores of 21-15, 20-22, 15-13.

"I'm so proud of Maile (Sellers) and Catherine (Griffith) for securing a win against a very high-level team," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "They were quick to stay on top in set one and three, and kept North Florida off balance.

"Grace (Convey) and Gabby (Love) played very efficiently. They made adjustments on their own and I'm extremely proud of the work they did on the court. In set three, Convey and Love were down 7-3, and came back to really challenge UNF No. 1 pairing. To only lose by two in the third set is phenomenal when they started down by so much. At the end, we missed two serves, which made all the difference in the third set."

Match 2 Recap: Arizona State 3, ULM 2
The Warhawks returned to the sand courts in the afternoon, falling to Arizona State by a 3-2 score.

The Sun Devils assumed the early 1-0 lead on court four as Samantha Plaster and Kate Baldwin posted a 21-13, 21-11 win over Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp. Arizona State picked ups its second victory on court one when the duo of Olly Okaro and Ashley Wenz tallied a 21-17, 21-10 win over Gabby Love and Grace Convey.

ULM rallied to tie the score at 2-2, thanks to back-to-back straight-set wins. First, No. 2 pairing of Maile Sellers and Catherine Griffith defeated Katelyn Carballo and Katie Cross, 21-18, 21-17, and No. 5 pairing of Audrey Brooks and Holland Ponthieux followed with a 21-19, 21-17 victory against Natalie Braun and Lauren Weinntraub.

Arizona State won the deciding match on court three as the duo of Cierra Flood and Kara Woodard outlasted Kayla Gallant and Tamara Merseli in three sets, 21-18, 18-21, 15-13.

"I'm extremely proud of Holland (Ponthieux) and Audrey (Brooks) and Catherine (Griffith) and Maile (Sellers)," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "Both pairs made high-level plays against a very high-level team. Both pairs made quick adjustments against the Sun Devils and truly kept them off balance. Catherine is such a strong presence at the net, and Maile is able to stay more relaxed and dig very difficult balls that come her way.

"Tamara (Merseli) and Kayla battled extremely hard on court three. This match came down to the wire, and the energy around the court was electric. Tam and Kayla were down 12-8 at one point in set three, and came back to earn a 13-12 switch. Kayla went back and missed a serve, which changed the momentum of the match, and we couldn't combat that missed serve.

"Our team leaves Arizona unsatisfied," Rishell continued. "With failure comes the ability to be resilient. With the right mindset, we can learn from our mistakes and have a phenomenal second half to our season."
