Alfaro Lifts ULM Past Texas State with Three-Set Victory at No. 1 Singles

SAN MARCOS, Texas. – A three-set victory by ULM's Emilia Alfaro provided the Warhawks with a 4-3 victory over Sun Belt Conference rival Texas State at the Bobcat Tennis Center on Sunday, March 24.
 
Alfaro closed out fellow No. 1 seed Ana Perez with a 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-5 victory in singles action to clinch the decisive point.
 
The Bobcats (5-8, 1-3 SBC) opened the match by snagging the first doubles win as Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez and Andrea Fuchs earned a 7-5 win over Jimena Garbino and Florencia Salerno. ULM bounced back with a 7-5 victory by Shivani Manjanna and Angeles Maria Cueto, who downed Rishona Israel-Lewis and Joy Chia Ming.
 
The Bobcats continued the back-and-forth battle in doubles action with a victory by No. 1 seeds Ana Perez and Julia Navajo-Melendez triumphed 7-5 over Tiffany Phaysouphan and Alfaro.
 
Texas State stretched the lead to 2-0 when Israel-Lewis emerged with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Phaysouphan in the first singles match of the day at No. 2.
 
Cueto got ULM on the board with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Murcia-Rodriguez as No. 5 seeds clashed.
 
Manjanna drew the Warhawks even at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Navajo-Melendez at No. 3. Salerno forged ULM in front 3-2 in the match as she fought past Fuchs in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 in the battle of No. 6 seeds.
 
Texas State rebounded to tie the match at 3-3 as Chia Ming rallied from a first set loss to take down Garbino at No. 4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, setting the stage for the decisive No. 1 singles match.
 
Alfaro delivered the win for the Warhawks, who improved to 8-1 on the season and 3-0 in Sun Belt play, while running their winning streak to eight-straight matches.
 
Next week, ULM continues conference action with home matches against Appalachian State (Saturday, March 30) and Coastal Carolina (Sunday, March 31).
