ULM Beach Volleyball Earns Split at HBU Invitational Saturday

HOUSTON – The ULM beach volleyball returned to the court to complete the Houston Baptist Invitational on Saturday afternoon (March 30), earning a split on the second day. The Warhawks opened the afternoon with a 5-0 sweep over Abilene Christian, but suffered a 3-2 setback to the host Huskies in the final match of the day.

The Warhawks were firing on all cylinders in the opening match Saturday, grabbing the first point when Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp posted 21-10, 21-10 wins over Amy Weiss and Kennedy Shelstead in a clash on the No. 4 court.
 
ULM picked up the second point on court five as Audrey Brooks and Holland Ponthieux completed a sweep of Sofia Resendiz and Lindsey Toney, 21-14, 21-17. The Warhawks clinched the match on the No. 2 court as the duo of Tamara Merseli and Grace Convey defeated Hunter Barker and Mackenzie Harris by scores of 21-10, 21-9.
 
The Warhawk combination of Gabby Love and Kayla Gallant pushed the match lead to 4-0 with a 21-9, 21-12 victory over Marybeth Sandercox and Brittney Roberts in a battle on the No. 3 court. ULM completed its seventh sweep of the season as the No. 1 tandem of Maile Sellers and Catherine Griffith closed out Eighmy Dobbins and Kate Mueller by scores of 21-11, 21-15.

Match 2 Recap: Houston Baptist 3, ULM 2
Looking to sweep the final day of the tournament, ULM returned to the court to take on Houston Baptist to complete the four-match event.
 
The Huskies grabbed the first point of the match as the No. 4 pairing of Maddie Butters and Conley Harris held off Elizabeth Moreland and Allie Kemp by margins of 21-19, 21-17. That lead grew to 2-0 after Danielle Wheeler and Meagan Carter managed a three-set win on court five over Audrey Brooks and Holland Ponthieux, 17-21, 21-15, 15-9.
 
ULM (13-11) answered with its first point of the match on court three as Gabby Love and Kayla Gallant claimed a 21-12, 21-16 win over Lauren Huggins and Kylie Bryan. The Huskies retaliated with a 21-16, 21-17 victory on court one as Tori Hinojosa and Aeriel Horton battled past Tamara Merseli and Grace Convey, clinching the match in the process.
 
The No. 2 tandem of Maile Sellers and Catherine Griffith ended the match on a positive note for the Warhawks, claiming a three-set victory over HBU's Bailey Banks and Natalie Bennett, 21-14, 18-21, 15-5.
 
"Maile and Cat did a great job as the No. 2 seed," ULM head coach Sara Rishell said. "In sets one and three, they dominated at the net. "There was a little bit of a lapse in the second set. Houston Baptist's pair really turned up their serves, and it was hard for Maile and Cat to adjust to that in set two.
 
"Gabby and Kayla were a very solid pair at No. 3. They both worked extremely hard and worked very well together. I'm so proud of them for the way that they worked together this weekend.
 
"We have a lot of work to do this week," Rishell continued. "Without losing, we wouldn't know our weaknesses. I'm excited to get back to practice this week and fine tune somethings. We're also looking forward to getting back in front of our home crowd next weekend."
 
ULM returns home next weekend to play host to the Warhawk Challenge. The two-day, four-match event begins on Friday, April 5 when the Warhawks face Central Arkansas (12 p.m.) and Houston Baptist (3 p.m.). The following day ULM faces New Orleans (10 a.m.) and Missouri State (4 p.m.).
