WEST POINT, Miss. – Back-to-back birdies down the stretch by freshman Otto Van Buynder helped the ULM men's golf team win the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on Tuesday, April 16. Van Buynder converted a 6-foot putt on the final hole to clinch the team victory.

The Warhawks closed out the tournament at 18-under-par 846 (278-276-292), finishing one shot ahead of Ole Miss (17-under 847) and three strokes in front of fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (15-under 849) in the 15-team field. ULM's 846 tied the fifth-lowest 54-hole total in school history as all five players in the lineup placed among the Top 35.

It marked the Warhawks' first tournament title of the season and its fifth Top-5 finish in 2018-19.

Van Buynder carded a 6-under-par 210 (67-71-72) and finished tied for seventh with Little Rock's Logan Pate. It marked the freshman's third Top-10 performance of the season. Van Buynder capped off the final round with 12 pars and three birdies, which came on the 10th, 17th and 18th greens.

"The guys pulled off a great win today over several teams ranked inside the Top 50, including No. 4-ranked Vanderbilt," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "There was a lot of pressure heading into the back nine holes today. We had a few miscues but fortunately finished the final two holes 2-under par to hang on for the win.

"Otto chipped in for birdie on 17 to match a birdie by the Ole Miss player, then piped a 3-wood down the 18th leaving 175 yards in which he ripped a 9-iron over the flag to within 6 feet," added Baldwin. "Coach Nathan Weant informed Otto that we needed that putt to go in for the team victory, and he responded by pouring into the center of the cup."

Junior Thibault Santigny fired a 1-under-par score of 215 (69-69-77) to finish in a six-way tied for 20th. Santigny capped off the final round of the tournament with 12 pars and one birdie.

Juniors Guillaume Fanonnel and Joao Girao shot even-par scores of 216 to tie for 26th in the final individual standings. Fanonnel, who tallied 12 pars and one birdie in the third round, posted scores of 70, 69 and 77. Girao recorded rounds of 74, 67 and 75, including eight pars and a team-best four birdies on Tuesday.

Junior Andoni Etchenique advanced 26 spots up the leaderboard on Tuesday after carding a 4-under 68 – the best third-round score by a ULM player. Etchenique, who notched 14 pars and four birdies in the final round, finished tied for 31st with a 1-over-par 217 (72-77-68).

"This is a huge momentum builder for the guys going into the Sun Belt Conference Championships," Baldwin said. "We know we have the firepower to get it done."

ULM will compete in the 2019 Sun Belt Championships, scheduled for April 21-24 in Miramar Beach, Florida.
