ULM Golf Finishes Second, Etchenique Third at Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate

JONESBORO, Ark. – Behind Top-Five performances from juniors Andoni Etchenique and Guillaume Fanonnel, the ULM men's golf team placed second in the 11-team field at the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate with a 9-over-par score of 873 (288-287-288). The Warhawks finished 16 shots behind No. 28 Arkansas State, which claimed the team championship on Tuesday, April 2 with a 7-under-par 857 (287-291-279).
 
ULM has finished in the Top Five of four of nine tournaments played in 2018-19. Overall, the Warhawks have placed in the Top 10 in eight of the nine tournaments.
 
Etchenique earned his best finish of his 2019 season and tied for the best finish of his career, claiming third with a 2-under-par score of 214 (67-75-72). That topped his previous top finish of the season (11th), which came at the Lake Charles Toyota Invitational (March 18-19). He was three shots off the pace established by A-State's Zan Luka Stirn and Jacksonville State's Benedikt Thalmaryr, who finished tied for first at 5-under-par 211 while posting identical scores of 72-70-69.
 
Etchenique, one of five Warhawks who finished in the Top 25, closed out the final round with 14 pars and two birdies, which came at the fifth and 18th holes, as he carded an even-par 72. He was named to the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate All-Tournament Team.
 
Fanonnel also claimed a spot among the Top-5 on the leaderboard, closing in a six-way tie for fourth place with a 1-under-par 215 (73-71-71). He was one of two Warhawks, who carded a 71 in the final round. Fanonnel, who recorded his third Top-10 effort of the season and fifth of his career, finished with nine pars and a team-best five birdies on Tuesday. He also tied for the best tournament score on the par 3s with a 2.83 average.
 
"Andoni and Guillaume played well this week, with both finishing in the top five," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "We finished second as a team, behind 28th-ranked Arkansas State. The team played okay, but we were a bit too inconsistent to make a serious run today."
 
Freshman Otto Van Buynder notched his fourth Top-20 performance of the season, finishing tied for 18th with a 5-over-par 221 (70-77-74). His final round included 12 pars and two birdies, which came in back-to-back holes on the fifth and sixth greens.
 
Junior Joao Girao made the biggest climb up the leaderboard of any ULM golfer on Tuesday, moving up 17 spots into 25th. Girao fired a 71 in the final round to close at 8-over-par 224 (78-75-71), recording 11 pars and four birdies along the way. Three of those birdies came on the back nine for Girao (13th, 16th and 1st holes).
 
The fifth player on the ULM scorecard was Michael Gilbert, who finished in a six-way tie for 44th at 14-over-par 227 (78-76-76). He equaled his second-round score on Tuesday, finishing with a 76. The Warhawk freshman produced nine pars and three birdies in the third round, recording two of those birdies on the back nine.
 
Two other ULM golfers, red-shirt junior Jeffrey Berry and freshman Keegan McLachlan, competed as individuals in the tournament.  
 
Berry finished in a four-way tie for 33rd after posting an 11-over-par 227 (76-73-78). With three birdies to his credit, including two in the second round, Berry capped off his final round with 13 pars.
 
McLachlan tied for 50th with a 54-hole score of 16-over 232 (74-81-77). After posting just one birdie in the first two rounds, McLachlan closed out the third round with seven pars and three birdies, which came on the second, 14th and 15th greens.
 
ULM will have a two-week break before returning to action April 15-16 at the Old Waverly Intercollegiate, hosted by Mississippi State, in West Point, Miss.
 
"We're looking forward to Mississippi State's tournament at Old Waverly Golf Club as the final tune-up for the Sun Belt Championships," Baldwin said.
