Fanonnel, Etchenique Earn All-Sun Belt Honors in Men’s Golf

Men's Golf
MONROE, La. – ULM junior Guillaume Fanonnel, who posted a school-record 71.31 scoring average and qualified to compete as an individual in the 2019 NCAA Stanford Regional, has been named to the All-Sun Belt First Team, as selected by the league's men's golf coaches. In addition, junior Andoni Etchenique has earned All-Sun Belt Third-Team honors.

"I'm very happy for Guillaume and Andoni," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "They both had a very good year but an especially good spring season, leading our team to new heights."

Fanonnel, one of 45 individuals selected to compete in the 2019 NCAA Championships, became the fifth golfer in ULM program history to qualify for the NCAA Regionals, joining Doug Farr (1971), Kenny Buchan (1989), Brad Surles (1995) and Gustaf Kocken (2011). He shot a 4-over-par 214 (68-76-70) to finish tied for 33rd in the NCAA Stanford Regional.

During the regular season, Fanonnel led the Warhawks in scoring average, par 3 scoring (3.01), par 4 scoring (4.10), par 5 scoring (4.60), eagles (7), pars per round (11.54) and fairways hit (.756). He also ranked tied for third on the team in birdies with 83. The 6-foot-3 Fanonnel posted four Top 15 finishes, including three in the Top 5. He scored 72 or lower in 22 of his 29 rounds, including seven rounds in the 60s.

"G's first-team selection is much deserved," Baldwin said. "He certainly deserves the honor with how consistent he was all year. His 71.31 stroke average set a new ULM record as well as 22 of 29 (76 percent) rounds of par or better with 7 rounds in the 60s.

"He made some great strides this year with his development as an elite player. With a good summer, we expect even more next year."

A native of Lyon, France, Fanonnel clinched ULM's semifinal victory over No. 1-seed Georgia Southern, 3-2, in the Sun Belt Championships, converting a 2-foot putt on the second playoff hole to beat Ben Carr, 1 up. His birdie putt on 18 forced the sudden-death playoff against UTA in the third round of the Sun Belt Championships. He finished in 13th place at the conference championships with a 5-under-par 208 (74-70-68). The 68 marked his lowest third-round score of the season.

Fanonnel was selected Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Week after finishing in a four-way tie for third at the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 24-26. Fanonnel fired a final-round 69 to close with a 3-under-par 213 (75-69-69). The back-to-back rounds of 69 also marked the first time in his collegiate career that he had consecutive rounds in the 60s.

He is listed No. 142 in the latest NCAA Division I player rankings (May 22), according to Golfstat.com.

It marks the second year in a row that Fanonnel has named All-Sun Belt, earning third-team recognition in 2018.

Etchenique ranked second on the team in scoring average (72.27) and birdies (97). He recorded two Top 5 finishes, including first place in the I-20 Showdown (match play) against Louisiana Tech. A native of St. Pee Sur Nivelle, France, Etchenique scored 72 or lower in 15 of 26 rounds overall, including six rounds in the 60s.

"Andoni started the fall season a bit slow for him but really turned it on this spring with 14 of 20 (70 percent) rounds at par or better, including six rounds in the 60s," Baldwin said. "His 71.15 spring stroke average was the best on the team.

"I was hoping Otto Van Buynder might earn some recognition but was just shy for consideration with his 72.79 stroke average for the year while playing in every event as a freshman.

"Our entire team is back next year, and we look forward to being even more competitive in 2019-20 on the national scale."
