Men's Golf
MONROE, La. – ULM junior Guillaume Fanonnel, who posted a school-record 71.31 scoring average and qualified to compete as an individual in the 2019 NCAA Stanford Regional, has been named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Men's Golf First Team while freshman Otto Van Buynder has earned Second-Team honors. In addition, fourth-year ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin has been selected LSWA Coach of the Year.

The All-Louisiana Teams are selected on the basis of nominations submitted by the state's sports information directors that included stats and honors compiled through the completion of the respective conference tournaments.

"It's nice to see Guillaume Fanonnel and Otto Van Buynder recognized for All-Louisiana honors," Baldwin said. "Each of them had a very good year and are very deserving.

"I'm also pleased to be recognized as Coach of the Year on the men's side, but I certainly want to share this honor with assistant coach Nathan Weant, who did a terrific job getting the guys ready to compete each week."

Fanonnel, one of 45 individuals selected to compete in the 2019 NCAA Championships, became the fifth golfer in ULM program history to qualify for the NCAA Regionals, joining Doug Farr (1971), Kenny Buchan (1989), Brad Surles (1995) and Gustaf Kocken (2011). He shot a 4-over-par 214 (68-76-70) to finish tied for 33rd in the NCAA Stanford Regional.

An All-Sun Belt First-Team selection, Fanonnel led the Warhawks in scoring average, par 3 scoring (3.04), par 4 scoring (4.11), par 5 scoring (4.58), eagles (7), pars per round (11.41) and fairways hit (.756). He also ranked tied for third on the team in birdies with 94. The 6-foot-3 Fanonnel posted four Top 15 finishes, including three in the Top 5. He scored 72 or lower in 22 of his 29 rounds, including seven rounds in the 60s.

A native of Lyon, France, Fanonnel clinched ULM's semifinal victory over No. 1-seed Georgia Southern, 3-2, in the Sun Belt Championships, converting a 2-foot putt on the second playoff hole to beat Ben Carr, 1 up. His birdie putt on 18 forced the sudden-death playoff against UTA in the third round of the Sun Belt Championships. He finished in 13th place at the conference championships with a 5-under-par 208 (74-70-68). The 68 marked his lowest third-round score of the season.

Fanonnel was selected Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Week after finishing in a four-way tie for third at the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 24-26. Fanonnel fired a final-round 69 to close with a 3-under-par 213 (75-69-69). The back-to-back rounds of 69 also marked the first time in his collegiate career that he had consecutive rounds in the 60s.

He is listed No. 142 in the latest NCAA Division I player rankings (May 22), according to Golfstat.com.

A native of Centurion, South Africa, Van Buynder led ULM in birdies (109) and ranked third in scoring average (72.79). He scored 72 or lower in 16 of 34 rounds, including five rounds in the 60s. Van Buynder placed among the Top 20 in six tournaments, including four Top 10 finishes. He carded a 6-under-par 210 and finished tied for seventh at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, recording back-to-back birdies to clinch the team victory.

Baldwin led the Warhawks to a runner-up finish in the 2019 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championships. ULM reached the match-play round of the Sun Belt Championships after recording a sudden-death playoff victory over UT Arlington to conclude the third round. The Warhawks upset No. 1-seed Georgia Southern, 3-2, in the match-play semifinals before losing to Arkansas State, 4-1, in the Sun Belt Championship match.

ULM, which finished among the Top 10 in 11 of 12 tournaments played in 2018-19, achieved its highest-ever national ranking at No. 84, according to Golfstat.com. The Warhawks won the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship with an 18-under-par 846, finishing three strokes ahead of fourth-ranked Vanderbilt in the 15-team field. ULM set four single-season records during the 2018-19 season, including team scoring average (289.03), par or better rounds (15), par 3 scoring (3.1698) and par 5 scoring (4.7789).
