Fanonnel Selected to Compete in NCAA Stanford Regional

Men's Golf
MONROE, La. – ULM junior Guillaume Fanonnel, who has posted a school-record 71.31 scoring average, has been selected to compete as an individual in the 2019 NCAA Stanford Regional, scheduled for May 13-15.

Fanonnel, one of 45 individuals selected to compete in the NCAA Championships, becomes the fifth golfer in ULM program history to qualify for the NCAA Regionals, joining Doug Farr (1971), Kenny Buchan (1989), Brad Surles (1995) and Gustaf Kocken (2011). The low individual not a member of an advancing team from each regional will qualify for the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, scheduled for May 24-29 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The 6-foot-3 Fanonnel leads the Warhawks in scoring average, par 3 scoring (3.01), par 4 scoring (4.10), par 5 scoring (4.60), eagles (7), pars per round (11.54) and fairways hit (.756). He also ranks tied for third on the team in birdies with 83. Fanonnel has posted four Top 15 finishes, including three in the Top 5. He has scored 72 or lower in 19 of his 26 rounds, including six rounds in the 60s.

"I've been working really hard on the mental part of my game," Fanonnel said. "Coach Nathan (Weant) has really helped me a lot. This year, he challenged me to step up that aspect of my game, and I've come a long way in that area. I still have a lot of room for improvement, so I'll keep working on it. But the biggest difference is my attitude and mindset, and when I experience success, it helps build confidence. I visualize all the different situations I might face in a round, and all the hard work is paying off.

"I'm super excited for the competition and proud to represent ULM. I'm going there without any expectations. I just need to play my golf. Every day is different in the game of golf.

"I've competed against some very good players this spring, from both inside the conference and outside … players from Auburn, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Ole Miss," Fanonnel continued. "If I can get into the Top 10 individually, then I'll probably have a chance to go to nationals. I can't control what others do, but I can focus on the things that I can control. I'll do my best and see how it goes. It's truly an honor to compete in the NCAA Regionals."

A native of Lyon, France, Fanonnel clinched ULM's semifinal victory over No. 1-seed Georgia Southern, 3-2, in the Sun Belt Championships, converting a 2-foot putt on the second playoff hole to beat Ben Carr, 1 up. His birdie putt on 18 forced the sudden-death playoff against UTA in the third round of the Sun Belt Championships. He finished in 13th place at the conference championships with a 5-under-par 208 (74-70-68). The 68 marked his lowest third-round score of the season.

Fanonnel was selected Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Week after finishing in a four-way tie for third at the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 24-26. Fanonnel fired a final-round 69 to close with a 3-under-par 213 (75-69-69). The back-to-back rounds of 69 also marked the first time in his collegiate career that he had consecutive rounds in the 60s.

He is listed No. 150 in the latest NCAA Division I player rankings, according to Golfstat.com.

"I'm very happy for G," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "He has worked very hard this year and has become a better player. His emotional stability and course management are becoming better which contributes to his overall consistency. He's looking forward to competing in the Stanford Regional and has a good chance of getting through if he has a good week. He must be the top individual that is not on one of the Top 5 teams that move on to the finals in Arkansas.

"G has set plenty of records this year and has his senior year ahead of him. We look forward to him having a good competitive summer back in Europe and returning next fall to start a great final year while leading the team to a postseason at-large participation."

The NCAA Stanford Regional will be played at the Stanford Golf Course.
