Three Warhawks Named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars

MONORE, La. – ULM juniors Guillaume Fanonnel, Joao Girao and Thibault Santigny have been named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for 2018-19, according to an announcement made by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Fanonnel, Girao and Santigny are majoring in business administration.
 
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors, an NCAA Division I student-athlete must to a junior or senior academically, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average. A recipient also must be of high moral character and in good standing at his college or university.
 
"I'm very proud of these young men," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "They take great pride in their academics as well as compete hard for ULM on the links. This honor is much deserved."
 
With three Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, ULM matched South Alabama for the most selections from the Sun Belt Conference.
 
Fanonnel, one of 45 individuals selected to compete in the 2019 NCAA Championships, became the fifth golfer in ULM program history to qualify for the NCAA Regionals, joining Doug Farr (1971), Kenny Buchan (1989), Brad Surles (1995) and Gustaf Kocken (2011). He shot a 4-over-par 214 (68-76-70) to finish tied for 33rd in the NCAA Stanford Regional.
 
An All-Sun Belt First-Team selection, Fanonnel led the Warhawks in scoring average, par 3 scoring (3.04), par 4 scoring (4.11), par 5 scoring (4.58), eagles (7), pars per round (11.41) and fairways hit (.756). He also ranked tied for third on the team in birdies with 94. The 6-foot-3 Fanonnel posted four Top 15 finishes, including three in the Top 5. He scored 72 or lower in 22 of his 29 rounds, including seven rounds in the 60s.
 
A native of Lyon, France, Fanonnel clinched ULM's semifinal victory over No. 1-seed Georgia Southern, 3-2, in the Sun Belt Championships, converting a 2-foot putt on the second playoff hole to beat Ben Carr, 1 up. His birdie putt on 18 forced the sudden-death playoff against UTA in the third round of the Sun Belt Championships. He finished in 13th place at the conference championships with a 5-under-par 208 (74-70-68). The 68 marked his lowest third-round score of the season.
 
Fanonnel was selected Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Week after finishing in a four-way tie for third at the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 24-26. Fanonnel fired a final-round 69 to close with a 3-under-par 213 (75-69-69). The back-to-back rounds of 69 also marked the first time in his collegiate career that he had consecutive rounds in the 60s.
 
He was listed No. 146 in the final NCAA Division I player rankings (June 2), according to Golfstat.com.
 
A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Girao led the team with nine subpar holes during the 2018-19 season. He ranked second on the Warhawks in pars per round (11.14) and fourth in both scoring average (73.55) and birdies (83). The 5-10 Girao scored 72 or lower in nine of his 29 rounds, including five in the 60s. He had four Top 20 finishes, including a sixth-place performance in the I-20 Showdown against Louisiana Tech (76-71 – 147).
 
Santigny finished fourth (tied with Girao) on the team in scoring average (73.55) and fifth in birdies (62). His four eagles ranked second on the team, and he recorded seven subpar holes during the season. The Paris, France, native scored 72 or lower in nine of his 20 rounds, including six in the 60s. The 6-0 Santigny placed third in the I-20 Showdown against LA Tech, posting a two-round total of 142 (76-66). He fired a season-best 215 (1-under) and finished tied for 20th at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, including back-to-back 69s in the first two rounds.
