SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The play of ULM's
Guillaume Fanonnel and
Michael Gilbert, who are third and sixth, respectively, at the UTSA/Lone Star Invitational placed the Warhawks fifth in the team standings after two rounds of play on Monday, Sept. 16 at the TPC Oaks Course in San Antonio, Texas.
Fanonnel, who sits three shots off the pace established by Lipscomb's Nolan Ray (-10), opened Monday with a first round 69. The ULM senior came through with five birdies, three of which came on the back nine, and 11 pars in the first round. Fanonnel followed that performance by carding six birdies, five on front nine, and nine pars en route to the lowest second round score (68) of any golfer at the event. He will head into Tuesday's third and final round with a 7-under-par score of 137.
Michael Gilbert is also a Top-10 performer for the Warhawks with an even-par score of 144, which has him in a three-way tie for eighth. Gilbert began play with a 71, after posting 11 pars and four birdies in a 1-under-par first round. He returned to the course in the second round and closed with 12 pars and three birdies, including two on the back nine, finishing even on the day.
ULM's
Joao Girao is responsible for the third-best score of the tournament (+8) after rounds of 72 and 80 left him with a 152. Girao fired an even par in his first round of the season, finishing with 13 pars and three birdies in the opening round en route to a 72. However, his second round included 13 pars and a score of 80, leaving him 41
st heading into Tuesday.
Sophomore
Keegan McLachlan, taking part in the tournament as an individual, is 9-over-par with a score of 153 (76-77). His first-round scorecard included eight pars and four birdies, including three birdies in a four-hole span on the front nine. In the second he posted 11 pars and one birdie, on the second hole, to close with a 77.
Also among the Top-50 competitors in the field was ULM's
Andoni Etchenique, who is locked in a six-way tie for 45
th with a 10-over-par score of 154 (76-78). Etchenique drove home three birdies in the first round, while carding nine pars, to close at 4-over-par. When he returned to the course in the second round, Etchenique emerged with three birdies and nine pars to finish with a 78.
Harry Lord, competing in his first collegiate tournament, wrapped up the day with a 13-over-par score of 157 (77-80). His first round 77 included 12 pars and one birdie, which came at the 11
th hole. However, in the second Lord tallied two birdies and closed with 11 pars, en route to a score of 80.
The two-day, three-round UTSA / Lone Star Invitational concludes on Tuesday.
