SAN ANTONIO, Texas – ULM's
Guillaume Fanonnel claimed runner-up honors Tuesday, the best individual finish of his career, with a score of 8-under-par for the tournament at the Lone Star Invitational, hosted by UTSA.
Fanonnel, who finished one shot off the pace established by Lipscomb's Nolan Ray, capped off the final round with a 71. Fanonnel scored a 208 (69-68-71), after carding three birdies and 12 pars in the final day of play. He recorded his birdies on the seventh, 14th and 17th greens. Ray edged Fanonnel for the individual crown, despite finishing Tuesday with a 1-over-par round of 73.
ULM closed out the event seventh in the team standings with a combined score of 35-over-par that resulted in an 899 (288-299-312). South Alabama took home top team honors with a 9-over-par score of 873 (285-294-294), edging out Houston and UT Arlington in a one-hole playoff.
"Congrats to Guillaume on his second-place finish this week in San Antonio, shooting eight under," said ULM head coach
Tim Baldwin. "He was very composed all week taking care of his business. Also, good job by
Keegan McLachlan today with a final round 71. He had it four-under at one point during the day.
"Overall, a rather disappointing start to the season," Baldwin said. "We struggled all week with our ball striking and general scoring. Our seniors need to play better for us to be in contention. We have to pick up the pace next week to get back on track in Birmingham at the UAB GMAC Invitational."
Keegan McLachlan, competing as an individual, climbed 20 spots on the leaderboard with a third-round score of 224. He fired a final round 71, placing himself in a four-way tie for 22nd, due in large part to five birdies and nine pars. Three of those birdies came on the front nine, on the 17th, 18th and first greens.
Andoni Etchenique closed out the tournament in a seven-way tie for 34th after a 12-over-par score of 228 (76-78-74). Etchenique managed to take advantage of three birdies and 10 pars to move up 11 spots on the leaderboard.
Joao Girao wrapped up the two-day, three-round event in a tie for 45th after finishing 14-over-par with a score of 230 (72-80-78). Girao had three birdies and eight pars on Tuesday to finish with the fourth-best score by any Warhawk on the day.
Michael Gilbert was unable to maintain the rhythm that he enjoyed on Tuesday, slipping to 56th overall with a 17-over-par score of 233 (71-73-89). The ULM freshman had seven pars over the course of the day. Meanwhile, classmate
Harry Lord finished with a 30-over-par score of 246 (77-80-89). Like Gilbert, Lord did not have a birdie in the final round, but he did manage nine pars.
The Warhawks return to the links on Monday and Tuesday when they head to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the UAB Invitational at Greystone.
