MONROE, La. – Junior Jahaanvie Walia is the first winner of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golfer of the Week honor for the 2019-20 season after taking third place at the South Alabama Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course in Mobile, Alabama, as announced by the conference office Thursday afternoon.
Walia finished the tournament with a 5-under-par score of 211. After opening play with a 3-under-par 69 on Saturday, Walia finished 1-over-par on Sunday at 73. She entered the final round Monday in a tie for fifth place on the individual leaderboard. Walia was one of just three golfers to shoot a final round score of 69 to move up the leaderboard and finish third overall.
The reigning Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year, Walia was steady throughout the tournament, carding the second-most pars of any player with 41. Walia tied for third in par 3 scoring at 2.92, and tied for fourth in par 4 scoring at 3.90.
"Jahaanvie is playing some great golf right now," said Director of Golf Tim Baldwin. "Her practices are very diligent and she is a sponge for information to get better. I look forward to her continued progress and growth in the game. It's nice to see her making some putts as of late. Jahaanvie is a good ball striker and just needs to take advantage of her opportunities."
The ULM women's golf team has the week off and will return to the course Sept. 28 and 29 at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California.
