MONROE, La. – One week after opening the 2020 indoor track and field season at the LSU Purple Tiger in Baton Rouge, ULM will make a trip to College Station, Texas, to compete in the Ted Nelson Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M on Friday, Jan. 17.
The Warhawks have visited the Texas A&M campus on seven occasions since the 2010 slate, including six straight since 2014. In those seven meets, ULM has posted 91 Top-10s and finished among the Top-3 on 14 occasions.
ULM's Alton Clay and Jemal Parharm are responsible for first-place finishes in the seven meets hosted by Texas A&M since 2011. Clay brought home first in the weight throw (20.74 meters) in 2018, while Parharm earned first in the 2018 long jump with a mark of 7.54 meters. Parharm also came through with a pair of second place finishes in the triple jump (47-feet, 9 ¾-inches) and long jump (23-feet, 2-inches) in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
Corey Wesley also had considerable success for the Warhawks at Texas A&M, posting a trio of third-place finishes in the long jump events in 2014 (22-feet, 10-inches), 2015 (23-feet, 6 ¾-inches) and 2016 (22-feet, 11 ¾-inches).
Edith Jebet and
Levaughn Battick are the only two current Warhawks with Top-3 finishes in College Station. Jebet laid claim to a third-place finish in the 5000-meter run a season ago, crossing the line in 20:15.27.
Meanwhile, Battick streaked down the 60-meter hurdle event in 8.24 on Jan. 13, 2017, placing third in the process. He is the only current men's competitor to enjoy three Top-10s at Texas A&M, coming in seventh in the 60-meter hurdles in 2019 (8.29) and ninth in 2016 (8.35).
ULM's
Brianna Sam has also enjoyed success in College Station, placing fourth in 2019 (56-feet, 6 ¾-inches) and ninth in 2018 (15.06 meters) in the women's weight throw.
Jasmine Scott-Kilgo has come through with a pair of Top-10s in the 60-meter hurdles (9.19) and the long jump (17-feet, 9 ¾-inches), finishing seventh and 10
th, respectively. Battick, Sam and Scott-Kilgo are the only three current Warhawks to have multiple Top-10 performances at Texas A&M.
RECAPPING THE LSU PURPLE TIGER (Jan. 10): In the season opener, the Warhawks earned 27 Top-10 finishes. Three ULM competitors—
Grant Girtman,
Jakob Fudge and
Jasmine Scott-Kilgo—were responsible for multiple Top-10 performances at the event.
Girtman earned a third-place finish in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.70 meters, after being edged out by Riccardo Klotz (Southeastern Louisiana) and Cameron Reed (LSU), who tied for first with a mark of 5.15 meters. Girtman capped off the men's 60-meter dash by closing fourth with a time of 6.94. He was joined among the Top-10 in the event by Warhawk teammates
Josh Newton (6.91) and
Jhavonte Perry (7.10), who were ninth and 10th, respectively.
Fudge capped off the meet by finishing second in the men's shot put (14.05 meters) and third in the weight throw with a heave of 17.37 meters. Fudge wasn't the only ULM competitor to close in the Top-10 of those events, as
Darryl Givens was eighth in the shot put (11.31 meters) and Jacob Houston was eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.92 meters.
Scott-Kilgo was the lone Warhawk woman to post multiple Top-10 finishes on the afternoon, enjoying a third-place performance in the long jump (5.88 meters) and a sixth-place outing in the 60-meter dash (7.84). Teammate
Rebekka Schubert was also responsible for a Top-10 finish in the long jump, placing fifth in the event with a leap of 5.68 meters.
