RUSTON, La. – The ULM women's tennis team combined to win seven singles matches on the first day of the Louisiana Tech Invitational at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.
In Flight 1 singles, ULM senior Drousile Dzeubou and sophomore Hala Badwy each picked up first round wins. Dzeubou topped Arkansas State's Thea Rice, 6-2, 7-5, before dropping a winner's bracket match to LA Tech's Leonie Schuknecht, 7-5, 6-2. Badwy swept A-State's Hunter Roper, 6-3, 6-3, before topping the Ragin' Cajuns' Floriane Picaut, 6-4, 6-0.
In Flight 2 singles, Warhawk senior Madalina Grigoriu and freshman Daniela Hernandez also had a pair of first round wins. Grigoriu moved to 7-0 on the fall in singles action with wins over A-State's Shelby King (7-5, 6-3) and the Ragin' Cajuns' Dana Radovanovic (6-3, retired). Hernandez won her opening round over A-State's Jill Morse (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5)) before falling to LA Tech's Ilana Tetruashvili (6-1, 7-5).
In Flight 3 singles, ULM sophomore Jelena Lopicic came up short in her opening match against the Ragin' Cajuns' Isabella Kierkegaard (6-2, 6-0), but rebounded with a win over Grambling State's Ana Ochoa in consolation play (6-1, 6-2). Warhawk junior Jimena Paula Garbino lost a pair of matches, falling to Arkansas State's Nejla Zukic (6-2, 7-6 (2)) and the Ragin' Cajuns' Christina Jordan (6-3, 6-4).
In doubles action, ULM lost all three matches. Arkansas State's Rice and Roper topped Badwy and Grigoriu, 6-2. A-State's King and Morse beat Garbino and Hernandez, 7-6 (5). LA Tech's Claudia Oravcova and Tetruashvili defeated Dzeubou and Lopicic, 6-0.
The LA Tech Invitational continues Sunday in Ruston.
