Warhawk Tennis Opens Home Schedule Against Grambling State

MONROE, La. – One week after suffering a spring season opening setback to Lamar, the ULM tennis team looks for its first win of the season in the home opener against Grambling State on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. in Heard Stadium.
 
The Warhawks, who capped off the 2019 season with a 5-1 mark at home, are looking to extend their home-court winning streak to three-straight matches after posting victories over Appalachian State (March 31) and the Ragin' Cajuns (April 10) a season ago.
 
In the clash with Lamar, Jimena Paula Garbino picked up her team-best fourth singles victory of the 2019-20 season in 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 fashion against Jasmin Buchta. The previous wins came in the fall slate as she triumphed over UT-Rio Grande Valley's Katarina Sasaroga, Ole Miss' Victoire de Samucewicz and Southern Miss' Monique Burton. 
 
Garbino has one more singles win than teammate Emilia Alfaro, who went 3-1 during the fall season. Alfaro, a first-team All-Sun Belt selection in 2019, who was sidelined against Lamar with a wrist injury.
 
Grambling State heads into the weekend with an 0-4 mark on the season after suffering losses to Louisiana Lafayette (6-0), Eastern Illinois (6-1), Nicholls State (4-0) and McNeese State (4-1). The Tigers have dropped 11 matches in a row, dating back to a 7-0 loss at Troy on March 15, 2019. Grambling's last win came against Mississippi Valley State, 6-0, on March 10, 2019.
 
ULM Recap (vs. Lamar): Garbino, who moved into the No. 1 single positions, produced ULM's only point of the afternoon with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 triumph over Lamar's Jasmin Buchta.
 
Lamar's tandem of Jayci Wong and Laura Sola Grau was awarded a walkover win at No. 3 doubles to open the match. Buchta and Sanja Jolic followed with a 6-3 victory over ULM's tandem of Garbino and Emma Billon as the Cardinals claimed the doubles point.
 
ULM's Giovanna Pereira and Madalina Grigoriu earned a 6-3 triumph over Bianca Vitale and Natalia Molina at No. 3 doubles.
 
Without a sixth player, the Cards' Ana Jolic was awarded a walkover win at No. 6 singles. Lamar built a 3-0 lead in the match as Sola Grau posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jelena Lopicic at No. 5 singles.
 
The decisive point for Lamar (3-2) came from the fourth-seeded Molina, who recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over Pereira.  The Cards extended their lead to 5-0 as Vitale claimed a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Grigoriu in a battle of No. 2 seeds.
 
ULM (0-1) got on the scoreboard with Garbino's three-set victory over Buchta at the No. 1 position before Lamar closed out the match with Sanja Jolic's 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 10-3 victory over Billon at No. 3 singles.
