Fanonnel, Etchenique Announce Returns for 2020-21 Season

Men's Golf
MONROE, La. – ULM golfers Guillaume Fanonnel, who posted a school-record 70.83 scoring average in 2019-20, and Andoni Etchenique, who led the team with 78 birdies while ranking second in scoring average (73.00), have announced their decisions to return for the 2020-21 season. Both student-athletes received the COVID-19 season of competition waiver.

"The return of G and Andoni is huge for our program," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "They bring a combination of experience and maturity that is invaluable. They'll be asked to extend leadership with our new players and be examples of how to train like a professional.

"G was the top player in the Sun Belt Conference last year. He has high goals for himself and the team as he prepares to play professional golf in the near future.

"Andoni is also looking forward to returning and having an exceptional year," Baldwin continued. "He wants to be one of the top players in the Sun Belt and among the Top 250 in college golf.

"Andoni also wants to earn his MBA and finish with a high GPA."

In 2020, Fanonnel was named to the Division I PING All-Central Region team as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. He was one of only three players from the Sun Belt Conference to be honored across six regions, joining Coastal Carolina's Zack Taylor (All-East) and Troy's Connor Futrell (All-Southeast).

In addition, Fanonnel was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Men's Golf First Team for the second year in a row.

A native of Lyon, France, Fanonnel finished the shortened 2020 spring season ranked No. 74 among NCAA Division I players, according to Golfstat, and posted an 8-4 record against opponents rated from No. 51-100.

"I'm really excited to play another year as a Warhawk!" Fanonnel said. "Due to the unforeseen circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, I didn't get to turn pro as originally planned, but instead, I get the opportunity to finish my college career the way I want it.

"I see this next season as an extra year to prepare myself and get better before turning pro. I'm aiming for a Top 25 national ranking, and I'll also do my best to help the team qualify for the NCAA Regionals as well. I think that would be amazing.

"We've got a solid team coming back next fall, and I definitely think we have a chance to reach the NCAAs," Fanonnel continued. "Big things are coming for the ULM golf program, and the best is yet to come!"

He led the team in scoring average (70.83), subpar holes/single round (7), fairways hit (.659), birdie conversion (.296) and greens in regulation (.741). His three eagles tied for the team lead and his 71 birdies ranked second. The 6-foot-3 Fanonnel shot par or better in 13 of 18 rounds, including five in the 60s. He posted two Top 5 finishes in 2019-20, including second at the UTSA/Lone Star Invitational (8-under 208) and fifth at David Toms Intercollegiate (11-under 205). Fanonnel was selected Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Week for his runner-up performance at the UTSA/Long Star Invitational last September.

His 72.50 career scoring average is the lowest in ULM golf history. Fanonnel has shot par or better in 50 of 94 career rounds.

Etchenique, who earned LSWA All-Louisiana honorable mention, also ranked second on the Warhawks in birdie conversion (.280) and greens in regulation (.706). His six subpar holes in a single round tied for second on the team. He shot par or better in 10 of 21 rounds. A native of Saint Pee sur Nivelle, France, Etchenique placed among the Top 15 in three tournaments, finishing 12th at the David Toms Intercollegiate (5-under 211), 15th at Arizona Intercollegiate (1-over 214) and 14th at Border Olympics (1-over 217).

"I'm glad to be back for one more year to help the ULM golf program to get to the next level," Etchenique said.

"With the COVID-19 pandemic, we didn't have the chance to finish our senior years the way we wanted to. It was frustrating after all we have done for the team to end up our collegiate careers like that.

"I'm excited to be back to play one more year with the team. I think that we have a great team and that we are going to be successful next year. We'll be one of the best teams in the nation. I'm getting myself ready to compete and to win. I just can't wait to be back and to compete for ULM with my teammates. Let's get it done!"

Etchenique's 73.53 career scoring average ranks as the fourth best in program history. He has fired par or better in 39 of 87 career rounds.
