MONROE, La. –
ULM Athletics kicks off its annual Warhawk Club membership drive on Wednesday, July 8 with the goal to double its enrollment.

ULM Athletics spends $5.5 million annually – more than one-third of its operating budget – in funding scholarships while providing educational opportunities for nearly 400 student-athletes, who compete in 17 different sports at the NCAA Division I level.

"The excitement is building for the upcoming 2020-21 season in ULM Athletics, and our No. 1 goal remains to ensure the health and safety of our student-athletes as well as the well-being of our entire campus community," ULM Athletics Director Scott McDonald said. "With the COVID-19 outbreak, it seemed like our world got turned upside down, but gradually, our country, our state and our community have begun the resocialization process. We, along with the rest of the ULM community, are committed to fostering a safe environment for our student-athletes as they begin to return to campus to pursue academic and athletic excellence this fall."

During the 2020 spring semester, ULM student-athletes posted a combined 3.41 grade-point average while 67 percent (237 of 354) of the student-athletes achieved at least a 3.00 GPA for the spring. In addition, 55 student-athletes graduated in May.

Despite the shortened 2019-20 academic year, ULM student-athletes, coaches and staff contributed more than 2,500 hours of community service.

With the early cancellation of the spring sports, ULM Athletics lost significant revenue (nearly $1.1 million), including NCAA postseason distribution as well as baseball and softball ticket sales. Ten student-athletes, representing spring sports, have received the COVID-19 season of competition waiver, so the Athletics Department has acquired $250,000 in unplanned scholarship expenses for 2020-21. As student-athletes begin to return to campus, the ULM Athletics Department also is incurring additional costs while striving to create and maintain a healthy and safe environment in its strength and conditioning facilities as well as its venues.

"Warhawk Nation, we need your financial support now more than ever before," McDonald said. "We encourage you to invest and impact the lives of our student-athletes. Invest in our student-athletes, so they have an opportunity to become champions, in the classroom, in competition and in our community."

McDonald and his senior staff have identified other priorities in the ULM Athletics Department continued efforts to enhance the student-athlete experience, including cost of attendance ($600,000 per year for 120 student-athletes), Malone Stadium weight room renovation as well as nutrition and fueling stations ($450,000), Malone Stadium lobby and SkyBox renovations (combined projects $500,000), and Fant-Ewing Coliseum video board installation. Long-term goals include construction of an indoor practice facility.

"For those renewing your Warhawk Club membership, we can't thank you enough for your continued support," McDonald said. "Your contributions are priceless.

"For those considering membership, we need your financial support because every gift counts. We encourage you to become a difference-maker for ULM student-athletes.

"Without your support, it is impossible for our program to reach its full potential. With membership growth, we can accomplish and celebrate great things."
