CHOUDRANT, La. – The ULM men's golf team enters the final day of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at Squire Creek Country Club on Tuesday with four players in the top 14, including ties. The Warhawks are in third place after shooting a 4-under-par 284 Monday to sit at 4-under-par 572 (284-288) for the tournament.
ULM is 13 shots behind leader UAB. The Blazers shot a 13-under-par 275 on Monday to move to 17-under-par 559 (284-275) for the tournament. Texas State is in second place at 10-under-par 566 (282-284).
Individually, senior Guillaume Fanonnel made a move on Monday, shooting a 2-under-par 70 to climb to a tie for sixth place overall with a 2-under-par 142 (72-70). He is seven shots back of UAB's Nick Robillard for the lead at 9-under-par 135 (67-68).
"We played better today but still are leaving too many shots on the course," ULM Director of Golf Tim Baldwin said. "We need a good round Tuesday to push the leaders. G and Keegan (McLachlan) led the team with 70s. We need the others to keep pace."
Fanonnel closed the front nine strong on Monday. He birdied the par-5 second hole but sat at even par going to the sixth tee box. Fanonnel birdied three of the final four holes on the front nine, putting up red numbers on the par-4 sixth, par-4 eighth and par-5 ninth. He added a birdie on the par-4 14th and totaled 10 pars on the round.
Senior Andoni Etchenique is tied for ninth overall after shooting 2-over-par 74 in the second round. He is at 1-under-par 143 (69-74) for the tournament. He picked up birdies on a pair of par-3s on Monday, doing so on the third and 12th holes. He added a birdie on the par-5 ninth. Etchenique also tallied 11 pars for his round.
Sophomores Keegan McLachlan and Otto Van Buynder are part of nine-way-tie for 14th at even par over the first two rounds.
McLachlan started hot on Monday and finished the round at 2-under-par 70 for a two-round total of even-par 144 (74-70). He opened with a birdie on the par-4 first and followed it with an eagle on the par-5 second. He briefly dipped to four-under on the round with a birdie at the par-3 fifth. He also birdied the par-5 11th hole and added 11 pars on Monday.
Van Buynder had a steady round Monday. He struck for birdies on the par-4 eighth, par-5 ninth and par-5 11th and added 13 pars to finish the round at one-under-par 71. He is at even-par 144 (73-71) through two rounds.
Freshman Melan Dhaubedal improved on his first-round score by firing a second-round 1-over-par 73. He is tied for 30th at 4-over-par 148 (75-73) for the tournament. Dhaubedal picked up three birdies on the back nine Monday, going under par on the par-5 11th, the par-4 13th and the par-4 14th.
Sophomore Michael Gilbert (77-75) also improved in round two, shooting a 3-over-par 75 on Monday. He is at 8-over-par 152 for the tournament. Gilbert birdied the par-5 ninth and par-4 14th in the second round.
