TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – ULM's
Brianna Gomez will play for one of eight qualifying spots in the main draw of the ITA Women's Southern Regional Tournament after winning a second-round match Thursday at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Gomez is the lone ULM tennis player remaining in the qualifying bracket after the first day of the tournament. Senior
Madalina Grigoriu was placed in the main draw and begins tournament play on Friday.
Gomez drew a first-round bye and defeated Louisiana Tech's Olga Blenzobas, 1-6, 6-2, 10-6, to advance to a final qualifying match against Samford's Olivia Jablonski. The two will meet at 8 a.m. Friday.
In the first round of qualifying, three Warhawks came up short of advancing. Junior
Jimena Paula Garbino lost to LA Tech's Ana Rodrigues, 6-0, 7-5. She dropped a consolation match against Northwestern State's Thitirat Kanaphvet, 6-1, 7-5.
Sophomore
Giovanna Pereira lost her first-round match to Southern Miss' Clara Tardivel, 7-5, 6-4. She then fell in a consolation match to Alabama's Ansley Cheshire, 6-3, 7-5.
Sophomore
Daniela Hernandez lost her opening-round match against Samford's Sofia Zaprianov, 6-4, 6-2. She lost a consolation match to LA Tech's Ilana Tetruashvili, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5.
Junior
Oleksandra Balaba received a first-round bye, but lost in the second round of qualifying to Southern Miss' Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, 6-2, 6-4.
Gomez starts the action for ULM on Friday at 8 a.m., and with a win, will play another match later in the day. Grigoriu plays her first match in the main draw at 3:30 p.m. Friday against Northwestern State's Rozalie Dohnalova.
Doubles play also begins Friday. Balaba and Grigoriu face UAB's Alexandra da Silva and Vanessa Mellynchuk in the first round at 9 a.m. Gomez and Pereira meet UAB's Enya Ratkic and Annalisa Smith at 10:30 a.m. Hernandez and Garbino received a first-round bye and do not play until 9 a.m. Saturday.
