HOUSTON, TX – The ULM beach volleyball team wrapped up the opening day of play at the Houston Baptist Tournament with a pair of 3-2 losses to HBU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Warhawks continue the two-day, four-match tournament on Saturday, February 27 when they face No. 1 LSU and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
MATCH 2: Houston Baptist 3, ULM 2
The Huskies established the early 1-0 lead in the match when the fourth-seeded pairing of Lauren Higgins and Allison Stanfill posted a 21-13, 21-16 win over
Ina Gosen and
Abbey Bufkin.
ULM dropped a close match when No. 5 seeds
Kaitlyn Nowak and
Brooke Hoven came up short against Mary Alper and Kristen Kleymeyer by scores of 21-16, 20-21, 15-13.
The Warhawks scored their first point of the match when the third-seeded tandem of
Abigail Elder and
Kayla Gallant completed a sweep of Megan Patillo and Natalie Bennett by scores of 21-11 and 21-15.
Houston Baptist sealed the match with a win by No. 1 seeds Lindsay Harris and Kylie Bryan, who triumphed by scores of 21-16, 26-24 over
Audrey Brooks and
Julia Blazek.
The attention turned to action on court two, where ULM's
Anna Demmer and
Katie McKay earned a point (21-17, 19-21, 15-13) by defeating Maddie Butters and Brennan Miller.

The Warhawks opened the season with a match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who emerged with a 3-2 victory in the opener of the Houston Baptist Tournament.
The tandem of
Audrey Brooks and
Julia Blazek gave ULM the early 1-0 lead when they took down Micaela Mirabal and Giuliana Corrales by scores of 29-27, 21-14 in the clash of the No. 1 seeds.
ULM opened with a 2-0 advantage as
Anna Demmer and
Katie McKay claimed a 21-18, 21-19 win over Mary Dodge and Taylor Horsfall.
The Islanders started to fight back in the third flight. Kylie Kvam and Brooke Adkisson defeated ULM's
Abigail Elder and
Kayla Gallant, 21-12, 22-20. Demi McInnis and Emily Ramirez bested ULM's
Ina Gosen and
Abbey Bufkin in the matchup of No. 4 seeds, 21-13, 21-15. They completed the comeback when Aurora Carnes and Migle Mazurkeviciute defeated
Kaitlyn Nowak and
Brooke Hoven, 22-20, 18-21, 15-13.
