ULM Splits Matches with HBU, Hendrix; UCA Match Suspended Due to Darkness

MONROE, La. – The ULM beach volleyball team earned a 3-0 victory over Hendrix College and suffered a 4-1 setback to Houston Baptist in the second day of action at the ULM Beach Invitational.
 
The Warhawks also are locked in a 2-all tie with Central Arkansas, but the match was suspended due to darkness with the No. 1 seeds on the court. The clash of the No. 1 seeds, which is tied at one set apiece, will resume on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
 
Houston Baptist 4, ULM 1
 
The Warhawks were unable to extend their winning streak to three matches after suffering a 4-1 setback at the hands of Houston Baptist in the morning match on Friday.
 
The Houston Baptist tandem of Kristen Kleymeyer and Megan Patillo snagged the first point of the match with a 21-13, 21-17 defeat of Holland Ponthieux and Avery Reynolds in a clash of No. 5 seeds. The Huskies lead grew to 2-0 when No. 4 seeds Lauren Higgins and Allison Stanfill battled past Abbey Bufkin and Elizabeth Moreland in three sets by scores of 20-22, 21-17 and 15-11.
 
The Warhawks sliced the Houston Baptist lead in half when the tandem of Abbie Elder and Kayla Gallant emerged victorious over fellow No. 3 seeds Mary Alper and Natalie Bennett by scores of 21-13, 21-11.
 
The Huskies answered by notching the next two points, clinching the match with a three-set victory (17-21, 21-19, 15-11) as Maddie Butters and Brennan Miller defeated the ULM tandem of Anna Demmer and Katie McKay in the meeting of No. 2 seeds.
 
Houston Baptist's No. 1 pair of Kylie Bryan and Lindsay Harris closed out the match with an 18-21, 21-13, 15-13 win over the Warhawk duo of Julia Blazek and Audrey Brooks.

Traveling with just three pairs, Hendrix College forfeited the fourth- and fifth-seeded matches against the Warhawks.
 
ULM's No. 1 pairing of Julia Blazek and Aubrey Brooks accounted for one of the three points, earning a 21-8, 21-6 victory over Avery Stephens and Grace Turner. Teammates Anna Demmer and Katie McKay also earned a point for ULM, completing a 21-11, 21-5 win against Morgan Ford and Megan Jinright in the clash of No. 2 seeds.
 
ULM completed the sweep of the match when the third-seeded duo of Abbie Elder and Kayla Gallant came through with a 21-6, 21-5 victory over Faith Hill and Charlotte Alexander.

The two teams are deadlocked at 2-2 with the decisive point of the match remaining undecided as darkness forced a suspension until 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
 
ULM grabbed one of its two points as No. 3 seeds Kayla Gallant and Abbie Elder emerged with a 21-10, 21-14 victory over Makenna Schmitt and Shannon Stone. The other Warhawk point came by virtue of a 21-16, 18-21, 22-20 victory by Abbey Bufkin and Elizabeth Moreland, who downed Julia Oravec and Kelsie Sager in a meeting of No. 4 seeds.
 
UCA's tandem of Evelyn Griffith and Faith Hasness fought past Anna Demmer and Katie McKay to earn a 21-16, 21-19 win in the battle of No. 2 seeds. Teammates Kayla Cook and Bria Garmon were responsible for the second point for the Bears, defeating Brooke Hoven and Avery Reynolds by scores of 27-25 and 21-8 in the No. 5 matchup.
