Warhawks Trek to Lonestar State for Sun Belt Conference Clashes

Tennis
MONROE, La. – The ULM tennis team returns to the court after an eight-day layoff on Monday, March 15 when it clashes with Sun Belt Conference rival Texas State in a 10 a.m. match. The Warhawks will follow that with a match against UT Arlington at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The Warhawks (5-2, 0-1 Sun Belt) have won three of their last four matches since posting a 5-2 victory over Louisiana Tech on February 24. ULM recently claimed 7-0 wins over Alcorn State on March 6 and Grambling State on March 7. The lone setback in conference play came to the Ragin' Cajuns, 4-3, on February 24.

ULM is led individually by Madalina Grigoriu, who is 12-2 on the season and 4-2 in dual action. She is 2-1 as both the No. 3 and No. 4 seed for the Warhawks.

Teammates Hala Badwy and Drousile Dzeubou have nine wins each, second-most on the team, with Badwy claiming two wins as the No. 1 seed for ULM. Dzeubou has three of those nine victories as the No. 2 seeded player on the ULM unit.

The top doubles team for ULM is Jimena Paula Garbino and Daniela Hernandez, who are 5-1 overall and 4-0 in dual action. All four of the dual wins have come as the No. 3 seed for ULM. Dzeubou and Grigoriu have a 4-2 mark in doubles action, posting a 4-1 mark in dual action as the No. 2 seed for ULM.

Texas State (4-4, 0-1 Sun Belt) is 4-3 at home this season and winners of three of their last four matches. The Bobcats closed out February with a series of wins over Tarleton State, 4-3, and Southwestern, 5-2, before opening March play with a 7-0 win over Prairie View A&M, 7-0. Texas State suffered a 4-3 loss to Arkansas State in its last outing on March 7.

Hana Kvapilova and Andrea Fuchs are the top individual players for the Bobcats, winning eight and seven singles matches, respectively. Kvapilova is a perfect 6-0 as the No. 1 singles player while Fuchs is 5-1 as the No. 4 seed for Texas State. Kvapilova has paired with Rishona Israel-Lewis to make up the best doubles unit on the team (6-4), posting a 5-1 mark in dual action.

UT Arlington (8-1, 2-0 Sun Belt) is looking to keep intact its 7-0 home record. The Mavericks had won seven straight to open the spring slate, but suffered a 4-2 loss to SMU on March 11. They rebounded from that setback by posting a 4-0 win over the Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday in Arlington.

Three players have at least eight singles wins on the season for the Mavs, including Carla Pons (13), Polina Akimova (9) and Lucia Natal (8). Pons is also one half of the best doubles team, which also includes Almudena Boza, and the unit is 6-0 on the season.
