PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The ULM tennis team claimed a 4-1 victory over Georgia State in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals where it will face Georgia Southern on Friday, April 15 at 2 p.m.
The victory moves the Warhawks to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal round for the eighth time in program history and first time since 2018, when ULM defeated Arkansas State by a 4-0 margin. It will set up the second all-time meeting with Georgia Southern at the tournament with the Warhawks winning the previous match, 4-1, on April 17, 2015.
ULM (11-5) claimed one of its four points with a pair of wins in doubles action.
Hala Badwy and
Oleksandra Balaba were victorious in the clash with fellow No. 1 seeds Ellie Aldrich and Andreea Stanescu by a 7-5 margin. The Warhawks' No. 3 seeded doubles pair of
Jimena Paula Garbino and
Daniela Hernandez clinched the point with a 6-3 win against Nansi Toskova and Maddy Frediani.
Badwy picked up her second point of the day for ULM, defeating Angel Carney in No. 2 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-2. Garbino was one of three Warhawks with a singles victory, defeating Frediani by score of 6-1, 6-2 in the clash of No. 5 singles.
Hernandez, who collided with Toskova in No. 6 singles, successfully earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory to help the Warhawks advance to the quarterfinals.
The lone point for the Panthers came from Stanescu, who claimed a 6-3, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles over ULM's
Drousile Dzeubou.
