ULM Advances into SBC Championship Match Play; Etchenique Records Hole in One

2021 Sun Belt Championship (54-Hole Results)

EL DORADO, Ark.
– After finishing among the top four teams through 54 holes of stroke play at the Sun Belt Championship on Tuesday, April 27, the ULM men's golf team advanced to Wednesday's match play round, No. 1 seed Georgia Southern, No.2 Little Rock and No. 4 Coastal Carolina.
 
ULM will be paired off against No. 2 Little Rock, while Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern battle in the other semifinal match at the Mystic Creek Golf Course. The semifinal matches begin Wednesday, April 28 at 8:30 a.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and live scoring provided by Golfstat. The championship match will follow the conclusion of semifinal play.
 
The Warhawks moved into third on the leaderboard in stroke play after posting the third-lowest round of the day on Tuesday, finishing with an 18-over-par 306. ULM finished 54 holes of stroke play at 50-over-par 914, 15 strokes behind first place Georgia Southern (35-over par 899) and four strokes behind Little Rock (46-over-par 910) through three rounds of action. Coastal Carolina (52-over 916) narrowly edged out Arkansas State (917) by one stroke to complete the match play quartet.
 
ULM's top individual finisher was senior Guillaume Fanonnel, who tied for seventh with a 10-over-par 226. Fanonnel knocked down a birdie at 17 and added 11 pars in the third round en route to a 5-over 77. Seven of his pars came on the front nine.
 
Senior Andoni Etchenique returned to the scorecard in the final round for ULM, finishing with a team-best 3-over-par 75. On his third hole of the day (No. 12), Etchenique recorded a hole in one and followed that with a birdie at No. 13. Etchenique would add one more birdie on the back nine, at the fifth hole, to go along with seven pars.
 
Freshman Mikkel Schmitt rebounded from a difficult second round to shoot a 4-over-par 76 in the third round and placed himself in a tie for ninth with an 11-over-par 227. Schmitt drained four birdies in the final round, including three straight at the 16th, 17th and 18th greens, along with another birdie at the seventh hole and added eight pars. His final round 76 was the second-lowest individual scorecard by any Warhawk.
 
Georgia Southern's Ben Carr earned the individual crown with a 3-over-par 219 after finishing even in the final round. He edged out teammate Luke Dasher and the Coastal Carolina tandem of Seth Taylor and Zack Taylor for second after the three finished tied at 7-over-par 223.
 
ULM's Melan Dhaubhadel and Otto Van Buynder finish tied for 27th at 19-over 235 in the Sun Belt Conference Championship. Dhaubhadel closed out the day with a 6-over 78 on a scorecard, which included birdies at the third and 14th greens along with 10 pars, including six on the front nine.
 
Van Buynder emerged with birdies at the third and 17th greens and came through with nine pars, including five on the front nine. It marked his eighth Top-30 finish of the 2020-21 season.
