Warhawk Tennis Concludes Regular Season Versus Arkansas State

Tennis
MONROE, La. – The ULM tennis team puts the finishing touches on the 2021 regular season on Sunday, April 11, when the Warhawks host Arkansas State for a 10 a.m. match at Heard Stadium.

ULM enters the match with a 9-5 overall mark and a 3-4 record in Sun Belt Conference play. A team victory would give the Warhawks their sixth 10-win season in the last seven years. The lone exception was an abbreviated 2020 season where ULM played just five matches.

The Warhawks have won five of their seven matches at Heard Stadium in 2021 after splitting a pair of matches last weekend. ULM rebounded from a 4-1 setback to UT Arlington on Saturday, April 3, by triumphing 4-1 over Texas State on Sunday afternoon.

The top individual on the ULM unit is Madalina Grigoriu, who is 18-2 on the season and 10-2 in dual matches. Grigoriu, who opened the season with 11 consecutive victories, has won her last seven straight, dating back to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Grambling State's Brittany Combest on March 7. Grigoriu has served as the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 seed for the Warhawks. She has five wins as the fourth seed, is 3-0 as a No. 5 seed and is 2-1 as the No. 3 seed.

Grigroriu is one of five Warhawks with double-digit individual wins in 2021, including teammates Drousile Dzeubou and Jimena Paula Garbino, who have 13 wins apiece. Dzeubou has earned seven of her 13 wins in dual action, posting five as ULM's No. 2 seed. Garbino, with 11 wins in dual play, is 7-1 as the No. 5 seed and 4-2 while competing as the No. 4 seed for the Warhawks.

Hala Badwy and Daniela Hernandez have also reached double figure victories in 2021, coming through with 11 wins each. Five of Badwy's wins have come in dual action, three as the No. 1 seed, while Hernandez has eight wins in dual play. Hernandez, who has played against both No. 5 seeds and No. 6 seeds for the Warhawks, has six wins as the sixth-seeded ULM player.

Dzeubou and Grigoriu make up the top doubles unit for the Warhawks, owning a 9-5 mark. All nine victories have come as the No. 2 seed.

Arkansas State (4-6, 2-4 Sun Belt) will play two matches this weekend in the Pelican State. The Red Wolves take on the Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday, April 10, before heading to Monroe on Sunday. The top individual on the team is Yasmine Humbert, who is 7-3 overall and 2-3 in dual action. Humbert also makes up the best doubles team, along with teammate Nejla Zukic, posting a 7-3 mark on the season.
