Tennis Set to Begin Dual Season Saturday vs. Grambling

MONROE, La. – The ULM tennis team is set to return to the court to open the spring season at 2 p.m. Saturday against I-20 foe Grambling at Heard Stadium.
 
The Warhawks are led by new head coach Abdelrahman Zaki, who took over the program earlier this month. ULM was 11-6 in duals last season, including a 4-4 mark in Sun Belt Conference play.
 
ULM features eight players on the roster entering the spring, following the addition of freshman Alex Anghel.
 
The Warhawks played in four events in the fall semester. Senior Madalina Grigoriu won a pair of events, taking singles titles at the Warhawk Invitational and Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational. In addition, she went 1-1 at the ITA Southern Regional and LA Tech Invitational.
 
Senior Brianna Gomez made her ULM debut in the fall. The UNCG transfer was second in singles at the Lady Demon Invitational and played through the qualifying bracket to make the main draw at the ITA Southern Regional. She picked up a win in singles at the LA Tech Invitational. Gomez teamed with senior Jimena Paula Garbino to win the Warhawk Invite doubles title and then paired with junior Oleksandra Balaba to win the doubles title at the Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational.
 
Garbino's fall included a runner-up finish in singles at the Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational and a third-place finish at the Warhawk Invitational. She also teamed with sophomore Giovanna Pereira to take second in doubles at the Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational.
 
Junior Hala Badwy played in two fall events, winning all three singles matches at the LA Tech Invite and claiming a third-place finish at the Warhawk Invitational.
 
Balaba played in three events, partnering with Gomez for the doubles crown at the Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational. She also was 1-1 in singles play at the LA Tech Invitational.
 
Sophomore Daniela Hernandez opened the fall placing third in singles and fourth in doubles with Grigoriu at the Warhawk Invite. The pairing of Hernandez and Grigoriu was fourth again at the Lady Demon Collegiate Invitational. She closed the fall winning a pair of singles matches at the LA Tech Invitational.
 
Pereira started the fall strong by placing second in her singles bracket at the Warhawk Invite. She followed it up with a third place showing in singles at the Lady Demon Collegiate Invite and paired with Garbino for second in doubles. She won twice in singles at the LA Tech Invite to end the fall.
