ULM Tennis Drops Road Match at Tulane, 7-0

Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The ULM tennis team dropped a hard-fought match at Tulane, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans.

"Tulane is one of the strongest teams we have on our schedule," ULM tennis coach Abdelrahman Zaki said. "Despite not having two of our top players due to injuries, I believe the girls competed well at several spots, mainly Nos. 4, 5, and 6. We put ourselves in many positions to win and created several chances, but credit goes to the Tulane players who played well at the deuce points. We controlled doubles from the start but fell in a close match 6-4 at No. 1, and we were leading 5-4 at No. 2 when the matched got stopped. Today was a great preparation for tomorrow's match (at New Orleans) and a great learning opportunity,"

Tulane's No. 3 doubles team of Adelaide Lavery and Brooke Theis opened the match with a 6-3 win over ULM's duo of Jimena Garbino and Daniela Hernandez. The Green Wave clinched the doubles point when the No. 1 combination of Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell posted a 6-4 victory over Hala Badwy and Alessandra Anghel. At No. 3, ULM's tandem of Madalina Grigoriu and Giovanna Pereira led Mackenzie Clark and Kristen Borland 5-4 when the doubles point was secured.

The Green Wave notched the first singles point with Lavery's 6-2, 6-3 win over Badwy at No. 2. Borland followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Grigoriu at No. 3 before Yelamanchili clinched the match for Tulane (4-2) by claiming a tie-break in the second set against Anghel, 6-0, 7-5 (7-4) at the No. 1 position. The Green Wave completed the sweep as Russell defeated Hernandez 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5, Jiayun Zhu outlasted Garbino 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) at No. 4 and Cora Barber knocked off Pereira in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Friday's matched marked ULM's first full competition since a 5-2 victory over Nicholls on Saturday, Feb. 5. The Warhawks' last home match against SFA, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 12, was canceled due to rain.

The Warhawks (2-3) travel across "The Crescent City" to face the New Orleans Privateers (4-1) Saturday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. at the University Tennis Center.
