CLINTON, Miss. – Both the ULM men's and women's cross country teams finished third at The Opener at Mississippi College on Friday.
"Both teams used this race as part of their first part of their workouts, so to finish as the top D1 team in the competition while not racing all out shows the potential this group has for the rest of the year," ULM cross country coach
David Silversmith said. "This season could be special for both groups but we have to remained focused on our individual and team goals together."
Mississippi College won the team title on the men's side, accruing just 17 points after posting five of the top six finishers. Hunter Kurz of MC won the individual title in 15:25.14.
For the Warhawk men,
Rojs Puks led the way in 17th in 16:42.00.
Juwan Blignaut was nearly 20 seconds behind in 17:02.10 for 23rd place. He was followed immediately by
Brayden Ortiz in 24th in 17:02.60.
Jay Parker, competing in his first collegiate meet, was fourth on the team and 34th overall in 17:23.65.
Teddy Gowen wrapped up the team scoring, placing 59th in 18:29.43.
Reid Guirlando was 76th in 19:57.84.
Mississippi College also won the women's side with 20 total points. Stellah Kiptui of Alcorn won the individual title in 18:06.70.
Paula Vaquera Cervantes was 10th in 19:52.60 in her ULM debut to lead the Warhawks.
Eliana Battle was right behind her in 11th in 19:55.0.
Jalynn Lozano took 23rd in 20:54.70.
Kimone Campbell was 27th in 21:19.80.
Anna Naff wrapped up the scoring in 33rd place in 21:46.40.
The Warhawks are off until the ULM Invitational on Sept. 17.
