Tourney-Low Round Vaults Women's Golf to 2nd-Place Finish in Jonesboro

Women's Golf
Jonesboro, Ark. -- The ULM women's golf team shot the lowest round of the entire tournament Tuesday to vault the Warhawks to a second-place finish at the 16-team Lady Red Wolves Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. It marked ULM's 17th consecutive Top 10 finish in regular-season tournaments, dating back to March 2022.

The Warhawks' combined score of 5-under par 283 in Tuesday's third and final round marked an impressive rebound from their rounds on Monday, when they shot a 14-over 302 and a 7-over 295.

"We didn't get off to our best start in the first round," third-year ULM head coach Rachel Pollock said. "Golf is a team sport, and we didn't put together four quality scores to start the event. The team, though, continued to battle through the cold and wind to finish the first day in fifth."

ULM's top three golfers finished in the Top 12 in the individual standings and were separated by a total of ten shots. As a team, the Warhawks recorded 42 birdies and two eagles.

Freshman Daniela Campillo  (74-70-68) was ULM's top finisher, finishing third overall with a score of 212 (4-under) for 54 holes. After posting a 2-under 70 in the second round, Campillo answered with a 4-under 68 on Tuesday. She recorded eight pars en route to a 1-under 35 on the front nine and followed with a 3-under 33 on the back nine with three birdies (12th, 15th, and 16th holes) and six pars. Her 54-hole total featured 10 birdies and a team-leading 38 pars.

Sophomore Johanna Sjursen finished seven strokes behind Campillo, tying for ninth place at 3-over 219. Junior Charley Jacobs  finished one stroke behind Sjursen, tying for 12th place at 4-over 220. Jacobs recorded an even-par 72 in the final round, posting an even-par 36 on the front nine with six pars, and followed with an even-par 36 on the back nine with five pars and three birdies (10th, 12th and 17th holes). Her tournament totals included seven birdies and 35 pars.

Freshman Sonya Weerasinghe finished in a seven-way tie for 53rd place at 13-over 229. Weerasinghe shot 5-over par 77 in the final round, posting a 3-over par 39 on the front nine with six pars, and followed with a 2-over par 38 on the back nine with three pars and two birdies (17th and 18th holes). Her tournament totals included five birdies and 31 pars.

Senior Alessia Mengoni and sophomore Anna Andrysova finished in a three-way tie for 72nd place at 18-over 234. Mengoni's 54-hole total included five birdies and 30 pars, while Andrysova recorded four birdies and 33 pars.

"Knowing we needed a strong final round, every player showed up and performed," Pollock said. "Daniela led the charge with a bogey-free 68 (-4), followed by Johanna's 70 (-2), Charley 72 (even) and Anna 73 (+1).  I was very proud of the team effort, knowing that we had to put together four low rounds.

"I'm happy with how we're progressing as a team," Pollack continued.  "We're very young, but they're continuing to show tons of maturity and resilience. We're improving each week."

Tournament-host Arkansas State won the team championship by 12 strokes, finishing atop the leaderboard at 4-over par, followed by ULM at 16-over and Samford at 19-over. Texas A&M Commerce's Benz Far-Arun (75-68-68) and Little Rock's Anna Dawson (69-71-71) tied for first in individual play.
