GCU Invitational [Final Results]

PHOENIX – The ULM women's golf team shot a school-record 10-under-par 278 in the third round of the GCU Invitational Tuesday, Feb. 28 en route to winning the team title by 13 strokes, finishing at 19-under 845. The Warhawks also shattered both the school and tournament records for the lowest 54-hole total.

ULM's third-round score broke the school mark established earlier this season after posting a 9-under 279 in the first round of the Lady Red Wolves Classic and its 54-hole total eclipsed the previous low team score of 5-under 859 at the USA Intercollegiate. The previous GCU Invitational and course record of 4-under 860 was set by the host team (Grand Canyon University) last spring.

It also marked the second tournament title of the 2022-23 season for ULM, which placed atop the leaderboard at The Judson with a 6-over 870 late last fall.

"What a week that was!" ULM head coach Rachel Pollock said. "The girls put themselves in a great spot going into today, and they stepped on the gas pedal this morning and never took their foot off. I couldn't be happier for them and all their accomplishments this week.

"That was a huge overall team performance where we needed everyone to be able to win. I'm excited to bring what we learned and some momentum into the HCU Invitational in a few weeks."

Four ULM golfers finished with subpar totals for the tournament, including three who placed in the Top 10.

Junior Alessia Mengoni carded a 6-under-par 66 in the third round to climb four spots into a three-way tie for first place at 8-under 208 (69-73-66), joining GCU's Lani Faufalealo and Montana State's Scarlet Weidig-Velaquez. Her 66 tied the second-lowest round in program history and her 54-hole total tied the school record, shared by Alison Knowles who shot a 208 in the 2013 Lady Red Wolf Classic. Mengoni recorded eight birdies in the final round, including six on the front nine (second, third, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth holes). She also managed eight pars Tuesday. Her 16 birdies led the 95-player field and she also posted 31 pars.

"Alessia had a great final round," Pollock said. "She hit it really well yesterday but couldn't get the putts to fall. Obviously, they were dropping today."

Faufalealo claimed medalist honors by winning a three-way playoff hole tiebreaker.

Senior Chantal Dueringer, who finished one shot behind the tournament leaders, fired a 3-under 69 in the final round for a 54-hole score of 7-under 209. It marked her fourth Top 10 finish in seven tournaments this season. Dueringer opened the third round with three consecutive birdies and totaled four on the front nine. She delivered 11 pars and closed out the round with an eagle on the par-5, 468-yard 18th hole. Her 54-hole totals included an eagle, 12 birdies and 35 pars.

Freshman Anna Andrysova recorded her fifth Top 10 performance in seven tournaments after carding a 2-over 74 in the third round to finish tied for eighth at 3-under 213. Andrysova registered five birdies, with three coming on the front nine, and nine pars Tuesday. Her 54-hole totals featured 13 birdies and 34 pars.

Freshman Johanna Sjursen was ULM's biggest mover in the final round, advancing 12 places on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 19th at 3-over 219. Sjursen shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday with three birdies (seventh, 10th and 14th holes) and 13 pars, including her last six holes in a row. Her 54-hole totals included 12 birdies and 31 pars. It marked Sjursen's second-straight Top 20 finish of the season and fourth overall in seven tournaments.

Sophomore Sara Hagglund shot an even-par 72 in the third round and ascended 11 spots in the individual standings into a tie for 46th at 9-over 225. Hagglund started the final round with seven consecutive pars, followed by three-straight birdies at holes 10, 11 and 12. She completed the round with 13 pars to go along with those three birdies. Her 54-hole totals included eight birdies and 35 pars.

ULM resumes its spring schedule in two weeks, competing in the HCU Husky Invitational, scheduled for March 13-14 at the Riverbend Country Club in Sugarland, Texas.
