YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The ULM beach volleyball team finished 3-1 at the Lion Up Beach Bash at Sugar Beach, earning wins over Spring Hill, Nicholls and Southeastern while losing their first dual of the year to HCU.
The Warhawks opened the weekend with a 5-0 win over Spring Hill. Kaylie and
Kaitlyn Beck started with a quick win at No. 5, defeating Lily Mascari and Jordan Atchison, 21-13, 21-16. At No. 4,
Avery Reynolds and
Claire Williamson took their game the distance, pushing extra points in the third set, but ultimately came out with the win over Brooke Borgmeyer and Elizabeth Hardouin, 21-19, 19-21, 16-14.
Madeline Marquez and
Rylin Adams clinched the win for ULM at No. 2, defeating Mikayla Boyer and Jaylyne Bell, 21-18, 21-17. The No. 1s,
Julia Blazek and
Kaitlyn Nowak, started their game off with a hiccup, dropping the first set, but came back strong and defeated Kassandra Fairly and Jessica Fairly, 15-21, 21-19, 15-11.
Brooke Hoven and
Tamsie Black finished off the match in another three-set thriller at the No. 3, beating Kyla Shappell and Linnea Berger, 19-21, 21-19, 15-11.
ULM then turned around to play HCU, who handed the Warhawks their first loss of the year, taking the match, 4-1. Reynolds and Williamson had the lone win of the match at No. 4 over Shelby O'Neal and Paige Palmer due to a forfeit because of an HCU injury, ending the game with a score of 21-19 and 21-9. Kaitlyn and
Kaylie Beck took their game at the No. 5 to a hard fought three sets, but came up just short to Mary Alper and Kylann Griffith, losing 19-21, 23-21, 15-11. At No. 1, Blazek and Nowak were defeated by Alison Stanfill and Maddie Butters, 21-19, 21-18.
Abbey Bufkin and Abbey Reinard clinched the win for the Huskies at the No. 3, defeating Hoven and Black, 21-12, 21-14. In one final effort to take one more pair win, No. 2 pair Marquez and Adams stretched their match to three sets, going extra points in the third, but fell to Kristen Kleymeyer and Lindsay Harris 14-21, 21-12, 17-15.
The Warhawks opened Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 win over Nicholls.
Kaitlyn Beck and
Kaylie Beck began the afternoon with a win over Kendall Battistella and Taylor Heeb, 21-10, 21-9, at No. 5. Reynolds and Williamson quickly followed at No. 4, beating McKenna Malone and McKay Wilson, 21-15, 21-16. ULM clinched the win at No. 1, as Blazek and Nowak also brought in a win, beating Aspen Steele and Kennedi Steele, 21-11, 21-19. The No. 3s, Hoven and Black, earned a win over Bethanie Durant and Alisha Wischkaemper, 21-7, 21-18. Adams and Marquez wrapped up the dual with a win at No. 2, defeating Luciana Chuong and Katie Jones, 21-16, 21-15.
The weekend finished with ULM defeating Southeastern, 4-1, to move to 15-1 on the season. Reynolds and Williamson opened the last dual of the weekend with a win at No. 4 over Jackie McGee and Lauren Schlotzhauer, 21-11, 21-10. Kaitlyn and
Kaylie Beck kept things going with a hard-fought win at No. 5 over Mabry Ward and Ysabella Lockwood, 19-21, 21-13, 15-12. ULM clinched the win at the No. 3s with Hoven and Black defeating Alexis Logarbo and Carley Petty 21-18, 21-9. The No. 1s, Blazek and Nowak, took their game to the wire but couldn't quite finish, ultimately falling to Jolie Hidalgo and Mia McKinney, 19-21, 21-18, 15-13. At the No. 2s, Marquez and Adams also took their game the distance, but came out on top, beating Eryn Wilks and Meagan Scuderi, 21-19, 18-21, 15-10.
The Warhawks will are home for the ULM Bayou Bash on Friday and Saturday at the ULM Beach Volleyball courts, taking on Southwest Baptist, Nicholls and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
