ULM Invitational (Final Results)

MONORE, La. – Playing host to its first home tournament in four seasons, the Warhawks swept both the team and individual titles at the ULM Invitational, which concluded Tuesday, April 4 at the par-72, 6,082-yard Bayou DeSiard Country Club. ULM dominated the nine-team field en route to winning its fourth tournament title of the 2022-23 season, finishing at 16-over-par 880, while Alessia Mengoni claimed medalist honors for the second time, shooting an even-par 216.

ULM's four tournament championships tie the school single-season record, which was first accomplished by the 2013-14 team. The Warhawks finished atop the ULM Invitational leaderboard, 13 shots ahead of second-place Sam Houston (294-298-301 – 893; +29), which entered the tournament ranked No. 53 among NCAA Division I women's programs, according to Golfstat.

As a team, ULM led the field in par-4 scoring (4.17, +26), birdies (36) and eagles (2).

"I'm thrilled to bring back a win at home," ULM head coach Rachel Pollock said. "This was something I've looked forward to since adding the ULM Invitational back onto our schedule. We're so thankful of the community, family and school support that was shown this week.

"The girls are playing so great and we have an extremely talented roster. We talk a lot about the process with our team, and this has really been a foundation to the recent success."

It marked the second consecutive tournament that ULM claimed both the team and individual titles. The Warhawks captured the Bama Beach Bash (March 19-21) in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with a 15-over 879, 23 strokes ahead of second-place Colorado State, while Chantal Dueringer won her first career championship with a 5-under 211.

Mengoni carded a 2-over 74 in the third round with a pair of birdies (first and 14th holes) and 12 pars, including seven in a row on the front nine (holes 2-8), and finished at even-par 216. The top four golfers were separated by just three shots, as Mengoni held off Houston Christian's Elise Parel (1-over 217), Dueringer (2-over 218) and HCU's Lou Rousselot (3-over 219). Mengoni's 54-hole totals featured 36 pars and nine birdies.

"I'm so happy for Alessia on her wire-to-wire win," Pollock. "She's a really great player when the conditions get tough and has been trending in the right direction. This win is very exciting."

Two other Warhawks placed in the top five, with Dueringer finishing third at 2-over 218 and Johanna Sjursen in a two-way tie for fifth at 5-over 221.

Dueringer, who claimed a spot among the top four on the leaderboard in her fourth consecutive tournament, posted a third-round score of 4-over 76. It also marked her seventh Top-10 finish this season. In the final round, she recorded her only birdie on the eighth hole to go along with 12 pars, including six in a row on the back nine (holes 11-16). Her 54-hole totals included 32 pars, nine birdies and two eagles. Dueringer already owns ULM's single-season records for birdies (93) and eagles (7).

"After a tough start, Chantal finished in the top three again," Pollock said. "It shows how much patience and resilience she has and how she's able to show up and compete for a title every week."

Sjursen, who placed inside the Top 20 in her seventh tournament including back-to-back Top-5 finishes, shot a 4-over 76 in the third round. She made two birdies (first and 13th holes) and 10 pars over the final 18 holes. Her 54-hole totals included 33 pars and eight birdies.

Anna Andrysova delivered her eighth Top 20 performance of the season, including her fourth in a row, after finishing in a four-way tie for 14th at 9-over 225. Andrysova carded a 5-over 77 in the final round with two birdies (fourth and 11th holes) and nine pars. Her 54-hole totals included 32 pars and seven birdies.

"Our two freshmen, Johanna and Anna, came to play this week too," Pollock said. "I'm so proud of how they have seamlessly stepped into our lineup and have created an immediate impact."

ULM's Line Petersen and Arkansas State's Kayla Burke were the top individual finishers in the field, tying for 22nd at 13-over 229. Petersen, who trailed the co-leaders, Mengoni and Dueringer, by just four shots heading into the final round, shot an 11-over 83 on Friday. She managed nine pars in the third round, including six on the back nine. Her 54-hole totals included 36 pars (tied for the team lead) and four birdies. It marked Petersen's second Top 25-finish of the season.

Sara Hagglund finished 52nd after shooting a 16-over 88 in the third round. Hagglund managed 17 pars and three birdies over 54 holes.

Up next, ULM travels to Daytona Beach, Florida, for the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship, scheduled for April 16-18 at the LPGA International.

"I'm really looking forward to gearing up for the conference championship this coming week and competing down in Daytona Beach," Pollock said.
