MONROE, La. – The ULM tennis team (3-4, 0-1 Sun Belt) dropped the conference opener, 2-5, to Arkansas State (8-4, 1-0 Sun Belt) at Heard Stadium on Monday morning (March 10). After the Red Wolves claimed the doubles point, ULM battled to find singles wins, but Arkansas State found four quickly.
Doubles duo Hatem/Iordanova fell first to Arkansas State's Grigoreva/Muro, with Cado/Molina close behind, though they kept it close. Alvaro/Li were in the process of bouncing back when the doubles point was clinched by Arkansas State, leaving the contest unfinished.
In singles play,
Mariia Iordanova and
Tingyi Li picked up the first losses, falling in two sets to Carla Muro Catellvi and Lilly Cvanciger, respectively. Hanmare McAslin defeated
Vanja Cado in two sets as well, clinching the fourth point and the win for the Red Wolves. As the Warhawks continued play,
Enna Krnjic fell to Loles Carbo Chova. To round out singles competition,
Mariam Hatem took the first and third sets against Anna Grigoreva for the first singles win for ULM.
Camila Molina Barranco claimed the first set in a tiebreaker, going on to win the super tiebreak in the third set for the second singles win.
The ULM tennis team will hit the road next weekend to take on Sun Belt opponent Texas State. First serve on Friday (March 14) is scheduled for 1 p.m. in San Marcos.
