Ivone Alvaro, a two-time all-conference selection as a collegiate player at Tulane University who also previously worked at Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy and Vilamoura Tennis & Padel Academy in Portugal, was named ULM women’s tennis coach on Jan. 1, 2023.

Alvaro has extensive experience working with international groups and individual players. She also has helped organize the BNP Paribas World Team Cup, the International Tennis Federation’s flagship wheelchair team tournament, as well as other ITF women’s and men’s circuit events.

A native of Albufeira, Portugal, Alvaro holds the professional coaching course credentials from the Emilio Sanchez Academy and Registry of Tennis Professionals.

As a senior at Tulane, she earned 2019 All-American Athletic Conference recognition as well as Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Second-Team honors after compiling a 19-14 overall singles record. Alvaro also posted a 22-9 mark in doubles competition, including a 16-4 worksheet while paired with No. 1 doubles partner Elena Muller. The duo of Alvaro and Muller climbed as high as No. 25 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s national doubles rankings.

As a freshman in 2017, she was named All-American Athletic Conference as well as The American’s Co-Freshman of the Year after producing a combined record of 35-8 (18-5 singles and 17-3 doubles).

A three-time letterwinner, Alvaro accounted for 102 combined wins for the Green Wave (102-50 overall; 48-29 singles and 54-21 doubles).

She graduated from the A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane with 2020, with a double major in management and marketing.

Alvaro played on the Portuguese National Tennis Team since she was 11 years old and twice competed in the ITF U18 European Championships. She won six titles on the ITF Junior circuit and reached a career-best Women’s Tennis Association ranking of No. 725 at the age of 16.

Her father Paulo played collegiate basketball at Coimbra University, where his team advanced to the finals of the European Championship. In addition, he competed for the Portuguese National Team and played in the professional league where his team won the national championship. He currently coaches a first-league team in Portugal.
