A two-time ULM graduate, former ULM football student-athlete, coach, teacher, athletic director and educational administrator, Murphy brings more than 40 years of experience in athletics, education, leadership, and student development to the role. Murphy played linebacker for ULM from 1979 through 1982. His ULM career includes two tenures as an assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator, serving from 1983 to 1988 and again from 1999 to 2003. During his first tenure, he also served as house director for the athletic dormitory.

Throughout his career, Murphy has served in athletics and education leadership roles in Louisiana, Texas and New York. His experience includes work as a district athletic director, director of health and physical education, assistant principal and dean of students, school safety coordinator, teacher and football coach.

His Louisiana experience includes service at ULM, West Monroe High School, Ouachita Parish High School, Farmerville High School and St. Frederick High School. He has also served at Vidor High School in Texas and at Amherst Central Schools, Lancaster High School and Daemen University in New York.

As former player liaison, Murphy works with ULM Alumni, ULM Athletics, and the L Club to strengthen lifelong connections with former Warhawks through communications, reunions, recognition, mentorship, student-athlete transition efforts, Hall of Fame activities and preservation of ULM Athletics history and traditions.

Murphy’s connection to ULM is lifelong. He grew up on campus beginning in 1965 while his father, Dean Tom Murphy, served in student-affairs leadership for more than three decades. Dean Murphy was a central figure in the development of ULM’s celebrated water ski tradition and is recognized in the ULM Athletics Hall of Fame for helping build a program that won 11 national championships in 15 years.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts in 1984 and a Master of Education in Health and Physical Education in 1987, both from ULM. He later earned a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Canisius University.

Murphy is the proud father of two children, Sean and Sarah.
