BEIJING, China --- One of nine athletes representing the Croatian national team, ULM track and field alumnus Andras Haklits completed his run at an Olympic medal with a 10th-place finish in the hammer throw during the games over the weekend.
After fouling on his first attempt, Haklits posted throws of 75.78 and 76.58 meters, but was unable to make the cut to the finals. Slovenia's Primoz Kozmus claimed the gold with a throw of 82.02 meters.
A former indoor and outdoor All-American, Haklits won the NCAA National Championship in the hammer throw for the 1999 season.
Haklits represents the first former ULM student athlete to compete in the Beijing games. On Thursday, American record-holder and four-time All-American Breaux Greer will compete in the preliminary rounds of the javelin.
Haklits joins Greer (1996, 2000), pole vaulter John Pennell (1964, 1968), men's basketball player Glynn Saulters (1968) and baseball pitcher Ben Sheets (2000) in representing ULM as a member of an Olympic team.
