Sean Fraser

Sean Fraser was named ULM soccer head coach in January 2020.

In two seasons, Fraser has lifted ULM soccer to new heights, including an eight-win season in 2021, marking the fifth-most wins in program history. The Warhawks advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the first time in program history after defeating Troy, 1-0, in the first round and top-seed Arkansas State, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. ULM had a five-match winning streak in the final month of the season, including the Warhawks’ first-ever win over South Alabama, 3-1, on Oct. 10. The club set single-season program records for points (146), goals (53) and shots (383).

Individually, Fraser coached senior Theoni Zerva and junior Courtney Marten to First-Team All-Louisiana and Second-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selections, while freshman Mara Grutkamp was an honorable mention All-Louisiana selection. Zerva and Marten’s selection to the All-Louisiana First Team was the first for ULM soccer since 2013 and the second time in program history to have two First-Team selections.

Zerva started all 20 matches in 2021, setting the program single season records with 32 points and 10 assists. Her 11 goals ranked second in a single season. She led the SBC and ranked 24th in NCAA Division I in points, led the SBC and ranked 25th nationally in assists and led the conference in assists per game (0.50) and shots on goal per game (1.75).

Marten played in 18 matches with six starts in 2021 but made gigantic impact in her time on the pitch. She set the single-season program record with 14 goals and five game-winning goals. Her 29 points ranks second in a single season behind Zerva. She led the SBC and ranked eighth nationally in goals per game (0.78) and was 14th nationally in total goals. She also led the SBC and ranked 23rd nationally in points per game (1.61).

Grutkamp played in 19 matches with 18 starts, scoring six goals with five assists for 17 points. She was named to the SBC All-Tournament Team after scoring a goal and adding an assist in ULM’s run to the SBC semifinals. Her five assists rank sixth in ULM single-season history and her 17 points were ninth in a season in program history.

The resurgence of the Warhawks started in the extended spring season in 2021 after much of the 2020 fall schedule was abbreviated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ULM went 5-3 in the non-conference spring schedule, picking up shutouts in all five victories. He earned his first win at ULM in a 3-0 win over UT Tyler on Feb. 3, 2021. The Warhawks went on to wins over Southern, Grambling, Nicholls and Alcorn to finish the 2020-21 season at 5-13.
