DENTON, Texas?North
Texas ran two interceptions back for touchdowns and completed a 99-yard pass
for a touchdown, as the Mean Green defeated ULM 31-21 Saturday night at Fouts Field.
It was the first victory of the season for the Mean Green,
who move to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt, while the Warhawks fall to 1-5
and 1-2, following a promising 30-13 victory over Arkansas State
last week.
Following a scoreless first quarter, North Texas intercepted
ULM quarterback
Kinsmon Lancaster twice in the second quarter, taking both to the end zone. Both of the interceptions came off tipped
balls by the Warhawk receivers. The
first was a 20-yard return by Montey Stevenson and the second was a 75-yard
return by Dominique Green.
The Green interception followed a 48-yard pass from Lancaster to LaGregory Sapp setting the Warhawks up on the
North Texas 31-yard line.
Following an outstanding punt by ULM's
Scott Love, Giovanni Vizza hit Casey Fitzgerald for a 99-yard touchdown, the
touchdown put North Texas up 14-0. Vizza finished 16-for-30 for 202 yards and a
touchdown on the game.
Fitzgerald caught a three-yard out route and broke a tackle
by Darrius Battles and went down the sideline for the score. The officials threw a flag on the play for a
block in the back, but after a lengthy discussion decided to pick up the flag.
ULM
had another chance to get on the board before the half, but Cole Wilson missed
a 43-yard field goal snapping a streak of 17 straight made attempts.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Trey Revell started the second
half under center for the Warhawks and led ULM on a six-play 72-yard scoring drive
capped off by a 46-yard touchdown pass from Revell to tight end Zeek Zacharie.
Revell was 14-of-29 for 196 yards and three touchdowns on
the game; all coming in the second half.
On ULM's
next two possessions, the Warhawks put themselves into long distance situations
with penalties. The Warhawks committed eight
penalties for 56 yards, after committing just two penalties for 10 yards last
week.
The mistakes on the second of those two possessions turned
into a Revell interception, setting up the Mean Green with a first and goal on ULM's nine-yard line. The Warhawk defense held North
Texas to just three points on the possession as Thomas Moreland booted
through a 20-yard field goal.
ULM's David Cooper blocked a North Texas field goal attempt midway through the fourth
quarter. It was the first blocked field
goal by the Warhawks since Travis Eickman blocked a kick at Kentucky last year.
The Warhawks tried to make things interesting late in the
fourth quarter scoring a pair of touchdowns and recovering an onside kick. Revell hooked up with Zacharie for a second
time with 1:23 remaining in the game and found Darrell McNeal on the two-point
conversions.
ULM
recovered the onside kick and Revell led the Warhawks on an eight-play 59-yard
drive taking just 46 seconds off the clock.
The two-point conversion failed and the onside kick sailed out-of-bounds
ending the game.
Lancaster
finished 7-of-16 for 95 yards before an injury sidelined him for the second
half.
The Warhawks return home next Saturday hosting Florida
International (0-6, 0-2) at 6:00 pm in Malone Stadium to cap off Homecoming
Week on the ULM
campus.
