MONROE, La.?Fans attending ULM's football game
against Florida International on Saturday night are in for a special
treat. The Warhawks host the Golden
Panthers in Malone Stadium at 6:00 p.m. Saturday night to cap off Homecoming
Week on the ULM Campus.
Prior to
the game, an authentic P-40 Warhawk plane will fly over the stadium and give
fans a look at the historical origins of the new Warhawk mascot. ULM's Warhawk
mascot has local connections to the P-40 Warhawk airplane, as it was flown by
northeast Louisiana's
General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers during WWII.
The public
is encouraged to attend a special viewing of the aircraft on Saturday, Oct. 20
from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Monroe
Air Center,
just north of the main terminal. ULM President
James Cofer and special guests WWII Pilot Dick Daggett, Rosemary Chennault
Simrall (daughter of General Claire Chennault), and Ace, the ULM Warhawk, will
be present at 1 p.m.
During the
first quarter of the game, former Warhawk and current Carolina Panther Chris
Harris will be signing autographs in the CenturyTel Kid's Zone. Harris leads the NFL this season with four
forced fumbles and is third on the Panthers with 32 tackles.
Harris was
drafted in the sixth round by the Chicago Bears in 2005 after a stellar playing
career at ULM. He
ranks second on the ULM
career interceptions list with 14 and is tied for the single-season record with
seven in the 2004 season. Harris led the
Warhawks in tackles in 2002 with 127.
Tickets for
the game are still available and can be purchased by calling the ULM ticket office at
