Turnovers Prove Costly for Warhawks Basketball at Ole Miss, 94-70

Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. ? The ULM men's basketball team picked up season-highs in points from senior Jonas Brown and junior Afam Nweke, but hurt themselves on offense with 31 turnovers in falling, 94-70 at Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon.

“We really played well for the most part with the exception being the turnovers,” ULM head coach Orlando Early said. “A lot of that has to do with Ole Miss. They got after us, put pressure on us and forced us into the turnovers. We have to find a way to be stronger with the ball. At some point we have to find a way to take care of the ball.”

Ole Miss, the Southeastern Conference's top scoring team, picked up 36 points off Warhawks turnovers to cruise to the 24-point victory. Brown finished the game as the leading scorer for ULM after scoring 14 while Nweke finished with eight.

The Warhawks posted their largest lead of the first half at the 14:10 mark when Nweke hit a jumper to make it a six-point lead at 18-12. Ole Miss stormed back, scoring the next six to tie the game less than two minutes later.

Despite committing 16 first half turnovers, ULM (1-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) entered the locker rooms trailing by only four points. Sophomore Brandon Roberts hit a 3-point shot at the top of the key to make it 42-38 at the intermission.

Ole Miss (4-0, 0-0 SEC) went on an 8-0 run to start the second half and never looked back, and pushing the lead to double figures at 50-38 before freshman Mitchell Hampton put the Warhawks on the board in the period. The Rebels scored 22 of the half's first 29 points to take a 64-45 lead with 11:25 remaining.

The Warhawks trimmed into the lead, narrowing it to as few as 12 points before the Rebels pulled away.

Freshman Raphelle Turner picked up his first career start and added nine points and four rebounds. Fellow freshman Mitchell Hampton also picked up key minutes for the Warhawks, scoring three points and pulling in a career-high five rebounds.

“They are getting better and better every time we play,” Early said. “They are getting better at every practice and that is all we can ask for. Like my first year when we had to throw some freshmen into the fire, we don't have the big guys so we are throwing them into the fire. They have responded pretty well.”

Senior Jordan Payne joined Brown as the only other player for the Warhawks in double-figures, scoring 13 points with eight coming from the free throw line. For Ole Miss, four players finished with double-digit points, led by 17 from both Eniel Polynice and David Huertas.

ULM returns home on November 27 to host Alcorn State in the team's first game at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in the 2007-08 season. The Warhawks will be looking to extend the nation's 13th-longest home court win streak when the two teams tip at 7 p.m.

“It feels good to be going home although we aren't playing great,” Early said. “We have to find a way to play a little better, but it is always nice to be going home.”
