MONROE, La.?The
Maroon Team completed the sweep of the ULM baseball Maroon & Gold "Blood Series" with an 11-3 victory over the Gold Team Tuesday
night at Warhawk Field. As the losers of the series, the members of
the Gold Team will donate blood to the Lifeshare Blood
Center.
Devin Pourciau picked up the win
for Maroon tossing five innings, allowing just three runs, one
earned, on five hits. The sophomore
lefty also struck out five batters and walked just two.
Ryan McMillan went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and Ben Soignier went 2-for-3 from the
plate, scored four runs and stole three bases to lead the Maroon Team.
The Gold Team pushed runs across
in the first inning for the third consecutive game. Nick Wade led off the inning with a double
down the line in left. Following an
error, a fielder's choice and a passed ball, Josh Chappel delivered a two-run
single to left field, scoring Dexter Fontenot and Louie Lancaster.
The Maroon Team took control
of the game scoring runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
They grabbed a 5-2 lead with
three runs in the third and two in the fourth.
After leading off the third with a single through the left side on the
infield, Soignier came around to score all the way from first on a throwing error
by Lancaster at
third.
McMillan and Casey Auttonberry
both had RBI singles in the inning.
A.J. Siggers singled home Matt Laird
in the top of the fourth pushing the lead to 4-2, then Siggers and Soignier
executed a double-steal with Soignier stealing home on the play.
Petey Thigpen brought the Gold
squad within two runs, 5-3, with a double off the top of the wall in left
field. Jordy Poche, who reached on a
walk, scored on the play.
Kelvin York extended the Maroon
Team's lead back out to three with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth
inning. Matt Collins and Auttonberry
led off the inning with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on
a passed ball.
The Maroon Team tacked on another
run in the sixth inning on a triple down the line in right field by Kyle
Suire. Soignier led off the inning with
a walk, stole second and third base and scored on the Suire triple.
Suire would come home to score on a single back up the middle by
McMillan stretching the lead to 8-3. York picked up his second
RBI of the game with a single up the middle scoring McMillan from second.
Siggers drove home Laird with a
single in the top of the seventh and Soignier scored his fourth run of the game
on a fielding error by Poche at second to close out the scoring for the Maroon
Team.
Josh Lett suffered the loss for
the Gold Team yielding five runs, just two earned, in 3 1/3 innings of
work. The junior southpaw struck out
seven batters and scattered six hits.
Drew Graham tossed the final 3 2/3 innings allowing six runs, three
earned, on eight hits, while striking out five.
Derek Ward closed out the game on
the mound for the Maroon Team allowing just one hit over two innings of work.
The Warhawks open up the regular
season on Feb. 22 at Nicholls State in the first of three games in Thibodeaux, La. Following single games at Southern Mississippi
and Louisiana Tech, ULM opens the home slate with
a three game series against Sam
Houston State
beginning Feb. 29.
