MONROE, La. ? The ULM women's soccer team picked up a hard fought 2-1 victory against Louisiana Tech in the first ever meeting between the two schools at the ULM Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
“We are happy with the results,” ULM soccer head coach Stacy Lamb said. “For the first 40 minutes of the game we did the things that we needed to do. I thought that after that, some of our problem areas showed. We know what we need to do to get better, particularly with the Sun Belt Conference schedule coming up.”
Senior Allison Matson scored her first goal of the season off a direct kick just outside of the penalty box to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead in the game's 13th minute.
ULM (4-3) extended the lead to 2-0 after sophomore Britnie Markham scored her first goal of the year in the 26th minute, a blast from 30 yards away that skirted over the fingertips of Tara Gavlak. The goal by Markham proved to be the game winner and was assisted by Matson.
“I was glad that Allison [Matson] and Britnie [Markham] were able to score today,” Lamb said. “They have been working hard and the shots just hadn't been falling for them. We count on them and hopefully that will have provided the spark that they need to get going.”
Louisiana Tech (0-6) was able to cut into the Warhawk lead, scoring a goal within five minutes of the half after Erika Rautio found the back of the net. Rautio's initial shot was blocked, but she was able to put the ball back in past the outstretched hands of sophomore Mallory George.
ULM finished the game with a slight 15-14 advantage in shots while the two teams both fired seven against goal. The aggressive Warhawks picked up four corner kicks to the Lady Techsters two.
ULM continues a three-match home stand on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. when it hosts long-time rival Northwestern State at the ULM Soccer Complex.
